Integrating Indigenous Foundational Knowledge with Technology
This Artifact contains two parts:
An educator guide, aligned with the Saskatchewan curriculum designed to support educators in taking students on the land.
A slide deck resource that provides students with step-by-step instructions.
This artifact represents my ability to ideate and design authentic learning tasks for students. The process of creating this artifact involved collaborating with an Indigenous community, preparing and holding meetings to gather information, and creating culturally responsive activities. My practicum placement ended, but I have offered my support to finish developing the resource in the fall with a new group of students.
Guiding Principles for the Indigenization of Elementary STEAM Education in Alberta
This artifact demonstrates my ability to research, synthesize information, and develop frameworks. This particular project was completed in 2021, however, I hve used these guiding principles within my classroom, in further research, and in my work with Indigenous stakeholders. This particular framework has become part of my foundation of teaching and I plan to continue my efforts to move it forward. A visual is shared below and the complete project can be accessed at: https://bit.ly/IndigenizeSTEAMs
Maker Space Critical Reflection Task
This artifact demonstrates my ability to design open-ended, student-centered, authentic experiences for students. In this Maker Challenge, students are first engaged in a provocation about their place on the land and then create a multi-modal land acknowledgement using high-tech, low-tech, and/or no tech options. This maker challenge has been published as part of the UBC MET Virtual Inclusive Makerspaces.
Visual Exit Slip
This artifact demonstrates my ability to collaborate with colleagues to design an authentic formative assessment for students to demonstrate their understanding of translations, reflections, and rotations. This task was included on Black Gold School Division's Engaging Students website.
Check-Bric Assessment Using Evidence From Text
This artifact demonstrates my ability to use a check-bric with clear criteria to assess student understanding of concepts. This particular assignment provides an opportunity to apply understanding of the concepts introduced in a unit in a creative way.
This assignment lends itself well to a self-evaluation from students. Using highlighters, students can identify the specific instances where they have met the criteria of the assignment. This task was included on Black Gold School Division's Engaging Students website.
