The simulations below will help you apply knowledge learned in your course related to pediatric patients. Please review the student guides to prepare for each simulation experience.
You will complete five (5) pediatric simulations:
Newborn Care, RSV, Jaundice, Sickle Cell Disease, and Appendectomy
Newborn Care Student Guide
Newborn Care Simulation Objectives
Conduct a comprehensive newborn assessment.
Prioritize and implement post-delivery care.
Facilitate family-centered care through education and communication.
What are the components of the APGAR score, and how is each element assessed?
What are the steps to prevent neonatal hypothermia immediately after delivery?
What is the purpose of administering Vitamin K to newborns, and how is it administered?
Why is erythromycin ophthalmic ointment applied to newborns, and what is the correct method of application?
What are normal vital sign ranges for a term newborn, including temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, and oxygen saturation?
What signs of respiratory distress or other complications should you watch for in the immediate postpartum period?
How would you explain the importance of APGAR scoring and immediate post-delivery care to the newborn's parents in a way they can easily understand?
RSV Simulation Objectives
Perform a focused respiratory assessment on an infant.
Prioritize care for an infant experiencing respiratory distress.
Effectively communicate with all members of the healthcare team using SBAR format.
RSV Student Guide
What are the key signs of respiratory distress in a 3-month-old, and why are infants more prone to these issues than older children?
What three interventions would you perform for an infant with respiratory distress due to RSV, and what’s the purpose of each?
How would you estimate intake and output for a breastfeeding infant, and why is accurate I&O monitoring important here?
What’s the proper technique for giving Tylenol to an infant, and what side effects should you monitor for?
If Sophia’s IV rate is set to 25 ml/hr, what total volume will she receive in 24 hours, and what signs of fluid overload should you watch for?
How should nasal suctioning be done in an infant, and what complications are we trying to avoid?
What infection control measures should you use for an infant with RSV?
Jaundice Student Guide
Jaundice Simulation Objectives
Conduct a comprehensive newborn assessment.
Demonstrate clinical reasoning and prioritization when caring for a newborn with health complications.
Collaborate effectively with the interdisciplinary healthcare team
What are the possible causes of lethargy, poor feeding, or jitteriness in a newborn?
What is neonatal jaundice, and what are its common causes in term newborns?
How is neonatal blood glucose monitored, and what is the critical threshold for hypoglycemia?
What are the initial nursing interventions for a newborn with abnormal assessment findings, such as low blood glucose or signs of jaundice?
How do phototherapy and glucose supplementation work to treat neonatal jaundice and hypoglycemia?
What are the key educational points for parents regarding newborn feeding, hydration, and monitoring for signs of jaundice or other complications?
Sickle Cell Disease Simulation Objectives
Perform a comprehensive pain assessment utilizing a developmentally appropriate pain scale.
Implement safe administration of pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic measures to alleviate pain.
Provide relevant and age-appropriate education to patient.
Sickle Cell Disease Student Guide
Describe the pathophysiology of sickle cell disease.
List the common symptoms of sickle cell disease and explain the physiological reasons behind these symptoms.
Identify at least five common complications of sickle cell disease and describe their pathophysiology.
Discuss the pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic interventions for managing acute pain in sickle cell disease.
Explain the importance of hydration in managing sickle cell disease.
Describe the strategies to encourage fluid intake in a pediatric patient.
Appendectomy Student Guide
Appendectomy Simulation Objectives
Conduct a focused physical assessment of a pediatric patient.
Identify potential complications for a pediatric postoperative patient.
Safely administered medications as ordered and indicated.
Describe the steps you would take to conduct a focused assessment on a 6-year-old post-operative patient. What specific assessments and observations would you prioritize and why?
Discuss the risk factors for infection in pediatric patients post-appendectomy.
Identify the clinical signs and symptoms of infection you would monitor for in this case.
Review the mechanism of action, common side effects, and nursing considerations for IV Zosyn.
Describe the process for safely administering IV antibiotics to a pediatric patient, including how you would calculate the correct dosage and monitor for adverse reactions.
Explain the importance of monitoring IV sites in pediatric patients.
What signs of IV site complications would you look for?
Discuss the steps you would take if you identified an IV site complication, such as infiltration or phlebitis.
