The simulations below will help you apply knowledge learned in your course related to maternal/OB patients. Please review the student guides to prepare for each simulation experience.
You will complete three (3) maternal/OB simulations:
Preeclampsia, Postpartum Depression, and Postpartum Hemorrhage
Preeclampsia
Preeclampsia Simulation Objectives
Identify and interpret key findings from a focused prenatal assessment.
Demonstrate cultural humility and provide resources tailored to the patient’s financial and social circumstances.
Engage with the interdisciplinary team to ensure continuity of care, including communicating orders, lab results, and follow-up plans.
Preeclampsia Student Guide
Describe how you would conduct a focused prenatal assessment on a patient at 26 weeks gestation.
How do you measure and interpret a fetal heart rate and fundal height, and what is the significance at this stage of pregnancy?
Describe the risk factors, signs and symptoms, and complications of preeclampsia.
Discuss the patient education you would provide for someone newly prescribed labetalol.
What local resources could you provide to a patient who is uninsured and has financial challenges accessing medications and prenatal care?
Postpartum Depression
PP Depression Student Guide
Postpartum Depression Simulation Objectives
Conduct a focused postpartum and psychological assessment during a routine follow-up.
Accurately interpret the results of the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale.
Demonstrate therapeutic communication techniques to build trust and explore sensitive topics like mental health.

Exhibit professional communication to the healthcare team using SBAR.
Demonstrate the proper interventions for managing a postpartum hemorrhage.
Postpartum Hemorrhage Student Guide

Identify and discuss the risk factors associated with postpartum hemorrhage. How can these risk factors be identified and managed during prenatal care?
Describe the physiological changes that occur in a woman's body during and immediately after childbirth that could influence the onset of PPH. How do these changes impact the management and treatment of PPH?
Describe how you would conduct a focused postpartum assessment on a patient.
What are the early signs and symptoms of postpartum hemorrhage? How can these signs be differentiated from normal postpartum changes?
Outline the initial nursing interventions for a patient experiencing postpartum hemorrhage. Why is it important to act quickly in these situations, and what are the potential consequences of delayed intervention?
Discuss the pharmacological agents used in the management of postpartum hemorrhage. Include at least three medications, their mechanisms of action, and the indications for their use.
