We are a research group interested in exploring, imaging, and monitoring the physical properties and 3-D geometry of multi-scale Earth structures from seismogenic faults, magma reservoirs, orogenic architecture, subducting slabs to the deep Earth interior. Through that, we develop better understanding of the phenomena observed and the mechanisms behind for various geophysical problems, particularly in aspects of orogenic tectonics and natural hazards. We are also devoted to improving seismic imaging techniques with multi-dataset joint inversion and seismic interferometry methods.
Prospective students and postdocs are always wanted! CLICK to know more about the IES and opportunities.

Our work on mapping detailed coseismic displacements for the 2022 ML 6.6 Guanshan and the ML 6.8 Chihshang using dense strong motion networks was accepted by Seismol. Res. Lett.. Combining strong motion and GNSS measurements reveals enriched near-fault deformation patterns and an intriguing localized subsidence between the two hypocenters that may impart large stress to trigger the Chihshang earthquake. This augmented dataset could offer valuable constraints for understanding shallow slip distribution, shallow vs. deep slip budget, and possible multi-fault interaction in future investigations.

Our work on high-resolution probing into the Milun fault zone, which was ruptured during the 2018 Hualien earthquake, through the deep drilling and distributed fiber-optic sensing has just been accepted by Communications Earth & Environment. We identify that the fault is asymmetric with clear hanging-wall effects and persistent strain amplification. The first-ever cross-fault downhole fiber network will serve as an unique observatory providing high-resolution in-situ fault zone monitoring in the world.

Our work on constructing the first 3-D regional S-wave velocity (Vs) model with consistent P-wave velocity (Vp) and Vp/Vs ratio models for northern Vietnam was published on Tectonophysics. By jointly using the crustal and head waves (e.g. Pg/Sg and Pn/Sn phases) from an augmented earthquake catalog combining multiple seismic networks, the new velocity models shed light on the detailed crustal architecture, suggesting that the Song Ma Belt is a primary boundary between the South China and Indochina blocks.

Our work applying the single-station ambient noise interferometry to studying temporal crustal seismic velocity changes over 20 years in Taiwan was accepted by J. Geophys. Res.. We observe both strong annual dv/v variations and co-seismic velocity drops associated with regional earthquakes. Systematic analyses with the weather data suggest that the rainfall-induced pore-pressure change plays a predominant role in driving the dv/v seasonality, reflecting a diffusion process from meteoric water into shallow crust.

An interesting collaborative work using coherent velocity model to probe the depth origin of the gravity anomalies in Taiwan was accepted by Terre. Atmos. Oceanic Sci.. We showed that the long-puzzling Puli gravity low in central west Taiwan could possibly be an artifact feature arising from the mismatch of the shallow and deep gravity effects due to the N-S trending undulation of crustal thickness beneath the western plain/foothill.
