Gopal Subramaniam

Learning Collectives Faculty Advisor

Chemistry and Biochemistry at QC

Dr. Subramaniam works closely with the HSI-STEM Peer Mentors, helping in their ongoing pedagogical training. He is also a member of the Chemistry Department at QC and has redesigned the introductory lab sections of Chem 113 & 114 to be fully inquiry based.

Outside of HSI-STEM, Dr. Subramaniam is interested in the application of NMR spectroscopy and molecular modeling to the structure and dynamics of small and large molecules. His recent work includes mechanism of ring-contraction reactions, fluxional behavior of benzazepines, synthesis and characterization of certain sulfones, and modeling the observed reaction pathways.

In the area of education, particularly educating future science teachers, he has formed a collaboration with in-service teachers to carry out project-based hands-on experimental methods in the classroom and bring the experiential learning to aspiring teachers and improve teaching methods. Currently he is an active investigator/director in two grants – the HSI-STEM grant, and another grant focused on training K-12 science teachers.
