“One language sets you for the corridor of life, two languages open every door along the way” Frank Smith
My concept of learning a world language becomes an essential part of my life, and learning in general becomes the passion that I dearly cherish. World languages helped me to expand my way of viewing the world around me, taught me how to appreciate cultural differences, and how to coexist with diversity at all levels of life.
When I was a French and an Arabic student, my experience in classrooms was different. I was bored most of the time because my teachers would emphasize grammar above everything. In addition, the theme and the units were planned around unrealistic tasks that did not help me when I was exposed to using the language in real life. Is for this reason that I wanted to become a world language teacher and wanted to use a different perspective to teach languages. I want to implement a communicative approach in my teaching because I want my students to be prepared to use and interact with the language they learn in real life situations. I want to plan my lessons around real tasks that are attainable and measurable for students. I want my students to discover the culture of the target language from its beliefs, values and behaviors and not only from its symbolic and touristic views.
I believe that it is very important to create meaningful, relevant and engaging lessons to provide students with a successful learning experience.
As a teacher I will provide students with a culturally rich environment and learning experiences that aim to celebrate diversity.
As a teacher I will apply the ACTFL standards of world languages teaching and the Can do Statements to provide students with the necessary tools they need to develop their performance and proficiency in the five goal areas of communication.
My dream as a teacher is to pave a safe and an enriching path of learning a world language, and for this reason I will incorporate the best teaching practices in my classroom.
