What a cruel optimism, thinking the robots will aid us all, 

that they will be the saviors in war-torn times

helping millions

When instead they tear apart streets, whole cities, and countries. 

What a cruel optimism, telling us that the robots are the solution to everything. 

In my lucid despair, I think of what difference I can make

can I really resist, when my work is based on AI? 

Because how can I claim that my work makes a difference 

when it’s based on the very same technologies that are tearing us apart?

But it is in the small actions that I can do something

resisting its use

explaining how there are good and bad sides to all technologies 

Maybe, maybe then can I make some kind of difference

There is precarious hope, in finding new ways forward

in asking ourselves what really matters. 

Because we cannot claim that our field is trying to empower society, 

when the technology itself is harming and taking power from people over and over again. 

So there is a precarious hope, in coming together,

in existing

we are resisting.
