2D character design is mostly used by concepts artists, it is also the first process to creating a character for a video game, the artists begin by drawing around 300 blacked-out silhouettes, during this process the artist draws the outline of the overall structure that the character is going to look like, then adds shapes onto it, this is how they are able to make their character unique to those from other franchises. Next, they add block colour, this gives the artist an idea of what the final product should look like, and still allows for little changes to be made if necessary. The final process is shading and highlights to their final design, this is as far as 2D art progresses as the next step is to make it 3D.
Watch Dogs 2 – Wrench, he is an anarchist and part of the hacking group DeDSec, that work to bring down the system, by using social media to expose their corruption, crimes, and find new recruits. Wrench also wears a mask that gives him more of a robotic sounding voice and uses symbols for his eyes to help him express his emotions, speculation suggests that he wears this mask due to a troubled childhood with debilitating shyness. He also has a collection of tattoos on his arms that are influence by cyberculture (https://watchdogs.fandom.com/wiki/Wrench_(character)). This characters design reflects his past as the colour palette consists of dark colours that make it seem like he doesn’t want to be seen linking into his shyness. His clothing also shows that he is an anarchist as it has a punky sort of look to it. His jacket is covered in spikes, patches and badges these are all generally associated with chaos, as it is no longer symetrical.
Madness returns – Alice, is portrayed as a troubled child after a fire killed her family and destroyed her home, which she blames herself for, she escapes this reality by escaping into her twisted hallucinations of Wonderland (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alice:_Madness_Returns). Her design is a facade as it makes the player think that they are a sweet and innocent little girl, untill you notice the blood stain which make you think that there is something suspicious going on.
Doom eternal – Slayer, has to stop Hell from consuming Earth and destroy the (alien) Maykr’s plans to end humanity. The game wants you to actively and aggressively attack. It is a 1st person shoot and as a result the character is supposed to be you and doesn’t have a character bio (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doom_Eternal). This character portrays strength and power with their boxy build and poses. Their simplistic design allows the players to put themselve into the characters shoes more easily.
Cyberpunk 2077 – Adam Smasher, he has very little to no humanity, even though he never really had any and has little regard for his own employees. Adam works for Arasaka, who told him he should transformers his whole body into a cyborg or end his own life, with very little regard for his own humanity he agreed. He is happy to kill enemies of Arasaka, to repay his debut for making him a cyborg (https://cyberpunk.fandom.com/wiki/Adam_Smasher). This characters lack of humanity is show by the fact that the only flesh part of their body left is his head and even that isn’t all there. His massive body shows the player that their newly upgraded body is incredible strong.
Road 96 – John, is a truck driver and a member of the Black Brigades and lost his index and middle finger trying to save Conny (his love), in the Peak Collapse of ’86 (landslide). After the accident he begins to regret joining the Black Brigades but is still working with them during the events of the game, as they are no longer who they used to be (https://road96.fandom.com/wiki/John). He has a very basic design but with a strong square silhouette, this makes him appear rather generic, since he is in a gang this is not surprising as they most likely want to present themselves as one front. Although he does have an interesting tattoo that is reminiscent of something in the game which tells the player that their is more to him than he is letting you know.
The Dragon Prince – Aaravos, a fallen Startouch Elf, who was trapped in a sub dimension, inside of a magic mirror for discretely causing many of the world’s crises. The last of the Great Ones. Highly intelligent, knowledgeable cunning and manipulative. Charming and charismatic, but mysterious and secretive, little is known about him. He sees the bigger picture and is always at least 10 steps ahead. Despite being shown as a little arrogant, he dislikes those he perceives as arrogant. His body language is fluid, even during the process of unlawful acts, while showing a high degree of confidence (https://dragonprince.fandom.com/wiki/Aaravos). His design almost makes him seem divine, which is fitting as he comes from the star and is a very rare type of elf. His skin is literally made of star which makes it easy for people to identify him. His colours consist of purples, pinks, blues, white and black these colours are commonly associated with galaxies. His attire is loose and over exaggerated in its form and shapes this which represents his fluid personality and arrogance.
Pokémon – Pikachu, the mouse Pokémon. It is an electric type, that can generate power full electric type attack, by using the static stored in its red, round checks (that are very soft and stretchy) (https://www.pokemon.com/uk/pokedex/pikachu). The design of this character tells the viewer that it is an electric type Pokémon as it is yellow, which is generally considered the colour of electric. It’s round checks and small stature make it come across as cute.
Disenchantment – Luci, is Bean’s own personal demon, and is the deuteragonist. His abilities include flight, immortality and fire manipulation. He is known to smoke, drink and get high, and act like the embodiment of Beans thoughts, encouraging her to do thing that she shouldn’t. He tries to act uncaring about Bean or Elfo and be the embodiment of a demon, but during the run of season 2 he is shown to truly care about them, despite his constant depreciation. Although he can treat those he doesn’t care or those who his friends don’t care about inhumanly (https://disenchantment.fandom.com/wiki/Luci). Lucis design is simplistic and makes him appear to be a cat that walks about on its back legs. A cat perfectly fits his personality as they can be loving or cruel, but overall they are unpredictable. His black colour let’s the reader know that he comes from a place of evil.
Arcane – Jinx, (formally known as Powder) is Vi’s little sister. When she was very young her parents were killed in the attempted takeover of Piltover, where she and her sister were then adopted by Vander (leader of the under-city). Later in the season Vander is captured by Silco and his people, when the children decide to rescue him, although Powder was told to stay behind, she manages to sneak out and follow them, she then creates a bomb and accidently kills Vander, Milo and Claggor. As a result Vi, disowns her in a moment of sadness and walks away before being arrested, resulting in Powders abandonment issue to resurface, before she is found by Silco who the indoctrinates her into his empire, and slowly begins to accept her as his own daughter. Though out the main events of Arcane Jinx struggle between becoming Powder again and returning to her sister (after finding out that she is still alive) or fully becoming Jinx, while her own insanity begins to intensify. After a near death experience, she is injected with the drug Shimmer this only fast-forwards her decent into insanity, before she captures Vi, Caityln and Silco and has an intervention between them as well as the voices of Claggor and Mylo (inside her head, it is a coping mechanics so she doesn’t have to admit to herself that she is responsible for their deaths) about who she should become. Eventually she chooses Jinx and blows up the government building in Piltover. She constantly shows sign of suffering from PTSD, abandonment issues, and has symptoms of schizophrenia (https://leagueoflegends.fandom.com/wiki/Jinx/Arcane). Jinx’s design is heavily influenced by her madness, her stripy trousers are reminiscent of that of clowns, her long, braided hair gives of a chaotic but orderly feel and her crop top with an X on suggests that although Powder resides in her heart, she is long gone and very much dead.
Dragon Ball super – Beerus, the God of Destruction (of universe 7). He was responsible for sealing the elder kai in the Z sword (minor god of creation) and wiping the dinosaurs from existence. He is modeled after Akira Toriyama’s cat, who almost died of a serious illness but somehow survived, the vet said that he could be some kind of demon. He is one of the most powerful beings in existence (being the strongest god of destruction) but he is lazy and playful, egotistical, hotheaded, fearless, confident (in his own power), malicious and comical at times. Much like a real cat, he displays a love of long sleeps, the more awake he is the less grumpy he is and has a strong desire to show his dominance over other life forms, as a result he claims whatever he pleases, with no thought of the consequences. He also has a great love of food and has destroyed many a world over inadequate food. His indifference to the destruction of hundreds of worlds and trillions of lives he has taken causes people to fear him greatly. Despite his frightening reputation he comes across as quite well mannered, respectful, polite and depending on his mood quite social and friendly, despite being not overly emotional (https://dragonball.fandom.com/wiki/Beerus). Beerus’ personality is perfectly embodies in that of a cat, his purple colouring is symbolic of his extremely high status as a god of gods. His golden adornment show off his power and status as it is a very precious metal. His blue trouser suggest that he has a hidden sadness within him.
Transformers The Bumblebee movie – Optimus Prime, is the leader of the Autobot, he is a noble, strong and passionate leaders, he is a moral example for everyone else, who has experience great loses. He almost always transforms into a semi truck, and has his iconic black shotgun as his main weapon. His red colouring tells people that he is passionate, enduring and dangerous (he’s a very experience warrior), his blue colouring is reminiscent of his past timidity and his sadness over the millions of Cybertronian lives lost in the war.
The lord of the rings and the hobbit – Gandalf the grey, is a wizard of middle earth he is kind and caring, while still being a little mischievous, he is best known for his wondering spirit and has a strong connection to animals. His garbs tell the viewer that he travels a lot as they appear torn and rugged, they also show people that Gandalf doesn’t value material wealth but in the connections he has with others.
Z Nation – Doc, he is a kind man, who is kind of like the fun, old, mischievous uncle or granddad, he is best described as a stoner, who has a good handle on medicine and natural remedies. His appearance is the typical stoner look, with the long shaggy hair and simple, aged clothes. He also has quite a few storage options like those who wear cargo pants, this lets the viewers know that he carries a lot of useful items.
Shaun of the dead – Shaun, Shaun from Shaun of the dead is just your typical man child, who still hasn’t left the nest and lives in his parents basement. His design shows his generic personality, but the fact that he has ginger hair is unique which suggests that there might be something special about him.
The Avengers movies & Loki (the series) – Loki’s, is a Norse god of mischief, he is always up to something and easily gets jealous of others, he is half frost giant, and was never treated properly by his adoptive father Odin but loves his mother Freya as she taught him all that he knows. His design is made of triangles, this suggest that he is manipulative and cunning, his green outfit suggests that he is the jealous type. His gold adornments suggest that he himself is of high status (as he is a god) and that he values himself quite highly. His helmet with horns tells the viewer that he is bad news and possibly evil.
Currently I don't know what kind of character I want to make, but I do have a theme for their design. This theme blends fantasy/magical elements with mechanical elements (such as a suit of armor, or special gear), into their design. The character has a range of magical/supernatural abilities, and technology that compliments it. My idea is incomplete eat the moment, so to help with the design process I am going to create a group of mood board with different examples of things that I like and might want to use in my character design. I am essentially going to work backwards for this project by doing the design first, then come up with the character bio afterwards. I am also going to create a group of mood boards of character designs I already like, so that I can use them as inspiration.
I chose a range of characters that include mechanical elements in their design. This would help me to generate idea about what my own characters design might look like, and visually explain to me how amour fits around a person's body. As my character has supernatural/magical powers I wanted to incorporate natural and organic elements into their design, such as horns, plants, or wings (animal anatomy), specifically organic features that might hint to what their powers may be, who they are, and their mindset, without revealing too much.
Gundam is a show and game, that has pilots maneuvering Mecha suits, kind of like Pacific rim. Their designs are generally overly complicated/exaggerated or very simplistic. They generally over exaggerate the main focal points of each design, such as weapons, shoulder pads, or components attached to the helm. They generally have one main overall colour, with one or two complimentary colour, usually one is more dominant that the other. They are mostly made of straight, jagged edges, and very rarely have any curves.
Transformers is about sentient robotic beings that have been at war for 4 million years. There are many different types of transformers some turn into beast, other vehicles, weapons bases, cities, etc... The designs generally incorporate parts of their other forms like car parts, tails or ears, etc..., with cybernetic aspects to them. Most vehicles transformers have semi minimalist designs, while beast transformers have more complicated ones as there are more moving parts. Most generally have a complimentary colour scheme but these can include a lot of different colours. Their overall design includes a range of curved and straight edges.
This is Voltron. It is about a group of 5 paladins flying robotic semi sentient lions around the universe and freeing planets from the tyrannical rule of Zarkon. Voltron is formed when the five lions combine and form one massive robot. I like the design of Voltron because of its chaotic but complimentary colour scheme and its overall simplistic look. I also love the design of Zarkon (guy with grey skin and rouge coloured amour) because of the way his amour fits together and how it is layers, also the unique colour scheme as I have never seen a villain before that walks around in rouge.
The characters above are Katsuki Bakugou (Dyanamight), powers of explosions in his palms, angry all the time, relatable, skilled, sometimes arrogant, clever and unfriendly, his square posture and sharp facial expression and hair show his off his power and unfriendly, arrogant side. Tusi Asui (Froppy), all the abilities of a frog, straight forward, doesn't take any crap, friendly shown by round eyes. Ochako Urakara (Uravity), zero gravity, can nullify gravity on what ever she touches, kind bubbly, straight to the point and loves to fight, strong build, round feature make her seem aprocable and freindly. Enji Kirashima (Red riot), hardening, turn their whole body to stone, very passionate, kind, a boys will be boys sorta guy, respects women, shown in his advertly masculine costume. Miriko, all the abilities of a rabbit but amplified, lives to fight, doesn't give up, her strong square build and posture makes her intimidating and strong. These characters are all heroes and their costumes give you a hit to what their quirks are. Dabi (Toya Todiroki) has the powers of fire, tried to cremate himself, while still living, absolute maniac, his scars are a clue to his past life, he is quite dramatic, and very annoying to his friends, extremely dangerous. Shigaraki, absolutely mad, very dangerous, has the power to destroy anything he touches, the hands he wear are his families that he accidentally killed, and his blue hair signifies his dispear.
I have taken inspiration from the six different types of elves n the dragon prince, these are: earthblood, moonshadow, sunfire, startouch, skywing, and tidebound elves. Whatever type of arcanum the elf is born into can alter their power, appearance, and abilities.
The top left image of a sort of cosmic godly being, called the Primardial mind, who is responsible for most of creation, I liked the design of this character because of the shapes and colour scheme. The top right character is Terror Blade a demon imprisoned in the 7 hells; he wants to remake the universe in his own image, I like his design because of his simplistic appearance of general human body with devil horns but almost industrial angel wings which suggests that there is some kind of divine knowledge behind his dangerous mindset. The middle left picture is of the moon goddess Selemene; her design is deceiving as her clothing and overall look suggests that she is humble an ancient, when in reality she is an egotist with anger issues, who thrives off of power.
Obviously, I can't take inspiration from magical worlds without including Tolkien's work. The image at the top and middle right are fans illustrations of the Valar (the gods of middle earth). They include: Melkor/Morgoth, Varda, Manwe, Yavanna, Ulmo, and Tulkas. The bottom left image includes: Morgoth, a few balrogs and Ungoliant. The bottom left picture is of the ring wraiths and the witch king of Angmar. The bottom right is fanart of Aragon, Legolas, and Gimli.
There are multiple gods and goddesses, that are generally more closely associated with creation or destruction, each god has their own world or galaxy (or galaxies, depending on their importance and where they are in the hierarchy of the gods) that is inhabited by a population that they have made in their own image, their civilizations work a lot like medieval kingdoms. These populations may have abilities, powers or characteristics that their god is tied to, but at a much lower magnitude. Other races like humans still exists but they don’t have a connection to the divine as a result they don’t have any powers or abilities, (although they can forge one with patience and training) their response to this means that they rely more on technology than races spawned by the divine. The fact that they were not directly created by a god but something that the gods made means that the don’t really know much about the god’s existence or in Earths case nothing at all, because of this they don’t have any loyalty to them and aren’t one of their subjects. On the other hand other races that haven’t been created by the gods but have knowledge of the gods and their people’s existence hold them in high regard and if someone from one of the divine civilizations travels to one of these planets they are treated in high regard, because people envy their connection to the divine as it affords them more power and influence over other naturally spawning races.
Name:
???
Race:
This character is not a god or divine figure, but they are from a population that was made in the image of their divine master (who is more closely related to destruction).
This character has a connection to a god that is more closely associated with destruction. Meaning that their overall appearance will be more dark, spiky and chaotic, they have a semi large build and are quite tall amongst humans, but about average in their own civilisation. They have long, thick and messy hair. Their head is also covered in these sort of naturally forming, shell, plates, they are pretty tough and do a good job of protecting their head from damage, but nestled inbetween them are some thin horns that stick out of the top and aim backwards.
Personality characteristics:
This character is loyal and passionate by nature. They have an attraction to chaos. They are generally quite quiet and are violet when cornered. With a strategic mind they are able to quickly decide on how to best handle the situation, but when they become overly stressed their link to the (demonic destruction gods) come out and they begin to rely on the embedded animal instincts, this is because the destruction gods still rely on the animal instincts and their madness making the chaotic, hard to predict, and very aggressive, as a result my character has inherited some of these due to their connection to the divine.
Character background:
There is little known about this character, they appear human but there is something almost alien about them, they appear to be more of a chaotic neutral. Their actions up and till now have been erratic and irregular. This is because they personality makes them come across as 2 separate people because the further away and the less interaction they have with their god the less influence they have over them and as a result their own personality is starting to come through as it was never given the chance to develop before that, it makes them come across to other character as rather conflicted (as they don’t know what nor understands what this connection to their god is and how it influences them). No one knows what they want or where they come from, but their actions are interfering with the war effort causing both advances and delays, in both sides progress. All anyone knows is that this character is inhumanly strong, fast, and skilled in the art of combat, as some of the people they have targeted and killed were previously considered virtually undefeatable. At the moment they not considered a main priority, although that doesn’t mean that their presents doesn’t concern people.Little do they know, that not only has this character been interfering with the war effort for the benefit of an unknown divine source, but they have been spying/observing both factions and gathering intel, although not even they know why their master wishes to cause discord on Earth at the moment.
I think the main demographic of my character would be age and interests, because most people who play video games aren't over 40 (not a rule, just and observation) since we grew up with them and the older generations didn't, so younger people would be more likely to want to plays and watch my character than those who have no interest in fantasy of non-fiction stuff. The other group would have to rely of a person's interests as some one who is interested in the supernatural is more likely to be interested in my character than someone who likes to play scramble for instance. My character would most likely best appeal to people who have interests in horror, non-fiction, the supernatural, action, aliens, or the show which the characters hail from that inspired mine, etc... This character wouldn't really fit into a location demographic because it most people can afford to watch TV or play games, and it wouldn't really fit into a gender demographic because I didn't design him to appeal to one side more than the other or anything like that so it is all really a matter of the viewers interests on weather they like this character or not.
I wanted to have a medieval look to my character as they convey strength, with the intricate indented details into the leather armour, that make it easy for them to move in, and the metal adornments that were placed in critical areas to protect their most important organs. They are the pineal of style and usability.
These types of armour appear futuristic to me with their inbuilt lights and fitted plates/suit. The red chest armour is one of my favourite as it takes an old design but gives it a modernistic twist to it. The hoodie is also quite appealing to me as it update an already modern price of clothing, it reminds me of the shifting of tectonic plates with lava flowing up inbetween them.
Tech wear is the one constant of all my different thumbnails and sketches as I think they suit my characters aesthetic and personality extremely well. It is also quite a unique style that is quite uncommon, with a futuristic twist to a fairly modern style of clothing already. I find that it also adds form and dimension to his overall shape, and they are a feature point of my characters attire.
I was thinking of giving my character a mask, or maybe some glasses. Although I’m not so sure yet. I want my character to have a range of storage options like a utility belt and bags, so that they can carry all there weapons and items, along with anything they pick up on earth and a few momentos to his home planet. I want the footwear of my character to be practical, that is why I chose boot as they have large tread that can grip pretty much anything, are versitile and are symbolic of the military, which my character is apart of on their own planet.
I want my character to have mastery over a range of different types of weapons. As an assassin warrior type character inspired by samurai, knights and demons they are a very quick and considered to be slightly above the average of strength within their own race. On the contrary, they are very powerful compared to the rankings earthlings and natural races.
Knives require a high degree of skills speed and a fast reaction time as a result a sword is the best fit for them, as they need to be able to move quickly but still inflict a decent amount of damage. The designs above are a combination of old and new styles of blades with a range of different types, I especially love the colour of the purple, green and blue tints of the collection of blades above. I want them to have a collection of bladed weapons that they can use for different occasions, at the moment I am thinking of giving them throwing knives/daggers, a sword and machete.
I wanted my character to also have some projectile weapons as well. I decided on a snippet rifle for sneek attacks and paid hits (as they are an assin this is quite a typical weapon for him) although I will probably make my snipper rifle a lot bigger than this one. My character will also care a pistol or to for mid range fights and so that they can shot people with a gun that causes a lot more damage and can fire multiple times with out having to take ages setting up the shot.
I thought my character should have an option for hand to hand combat if they ever need it. The first thing that came to my mind was a knuckle duster or boxing tape. The first knuckle below is just a simple golden one, the next is an example boxing tape bound round someone’s hands, and the final image is of some futuristic knuckle dusters that electrocute whoever they hit. I would like my characters knuckle duster to do a similar thing, but to burn people instead with red hot metal that heats up on the bit that comes into contact with your opponent.
I am using black, grey and purple as the basis for my colour palette. I have chosen these three base colour because they represent different aspects of my character. My character works for a god who is associated with destruction I chose black as it represents evil (although destruction isn’t wholly a bad thing, that is how most people interpret it) and is the first thing people think of when they hear/see destruction as once something has disappeared there is only nothingness, usually represented by the colour black.
I chose the colour purple because it represents royalty, wealth and power, as my character is part of a race created by the god that they serve, and to some if not most of the rest of their race feel superior to other races who don't have a connection to the gods.
I also chose the colour grey because it means neutrality and balance, creation and destruction must always be in balance (like Yin and Yang), and to the other characters fighting in the war, who don't know who this character is, they would come across as a chaotic neutral character. I wanted the overall value of these basis colours to be muted, because my characters affiliation shouldn't define or overshadow their personality.
Queen Aditi's colour palette is also very similar to the colour palette I want to use for my own character except for the fact that there are two many light colour in comparison to the dark. For my own character I would skip the yellow, brighten the orange and increase is concentration and then pick a few more tint between the brown and red colours (purple box). In conclusion, I think my final colour palette will end up being some kind of combination between Queen Aditi and Zarkon.
This is my favourite colour palette as it fits the characters personality best and has a good overall value to the colour palette although I will need a slightly darker red and orange to properly balance the value. I chose a black with warm brownish undertones to it to give let the viewer know that although the are descended from the more cruel gods there is still some good in them. The red represents their passion, I chose orange because it conveys energy and is attention grabbing this will get the viewer hyped whenever this character is on scene. I chose purple, with grey undertones to to convey status.
This is my second favourite, I like the design of the horns as they give my character a fantasy feel, but the hair doesn’t match it as there is to much going on and it’s hard to tell the hair apart from the horns. I did go for a spiky look this is a little to much and plays to much into the stereotype that a villain must have spikes all over them. I do like the design of the leg strap and utility belt though as it is unique but functional. I also liked the idea of my character not being completely symetrical as I think it adds some gravity to the character and make him seem relatable. I chose an overall triangular pose for this character as it lets the viewer know that they are a very quick fighter, is a manipulator, while it also tells the viewer that they are battle ready.
This character is my favourite as well as everyone else’s. They have an overall samurai appearance to them, as I they are a clever and calculated fighter, but once they lose their composure they become more aggression than reactive. There head design combines plates and horns with long, thick and messy hair, which lead me to quite an interesting overall bust design. I wanted to keep the design of this character simplistic, but with unique shapes for its focus points, that is why they only have a simple chest plate design, with a body suit and baggy trousers with lots of pockets to add more dimension to their figure. Their overall pose is squared to express their strength to others and make them appear strong, confident and intimidating. Their body include a mixture of squares and triangles to show that they are quick, while strong, honourable and yet devious. This is the silhouette I have decided to uses for my final design as it was the one that me and everyone I showed it to was most drawn to.
I don’t know how to feel about this character design, while I like the head design and the arm band, anything below it feels like a cheap imitation of my favourite design. There poses is triangular to so the viewer that they are dangerous and cunning, I tried to make it seem like he was investigating something. I tried to make the make seem like on of the masks attached to the helmet of a knight, I did quite like this and might include it in my later designs. I also started messing around with the design of weapon, with this silhouette.
With this one I wanted to try something that looked completely different to the others, it was quite heavily inspired by Gundam in the design of the head and jacket. I did quite like the head design but wasn’t to keen on the rest, in my mind the different parts of the design just don’t go together, so other than a few element from the head I’ll l probably won’t use any of this in my final design. The square pose and their action within it were me trying to make it seem like they were in a default fighting poses with their first guarding their face, but I’m not great at drawing human bodies in difficult positions and as a result it is a bit hard to tell what they are doing.
I wanted to draw a load of different options for all of the parts of my character and then try them in different combinations to see which one made up the silhouette I liked the most. These are what I came up with.
The most basic and common ideas I had to include very elf ears and human, although I drew two different types of elf each, since in media today they either have very long ears, this is more of a cartoonist one or just human ones with a very small point on the top like the elves in the lord of the rings films. I then started experimenting with other types of animal ears I could use like a bats or this sort of king cobra head piece, then I tried using the wings of bird one with the with the wing facing forward the other upwards, I then decided to try the same thing but with a bat. Then finally I decided to try it with elf ears again but with multiple points on them. My favourite ended up being the long elf ears, traditional hit, the multiple pointed elf ears, unique and something I came up with, and the upwards facing wing ears, cool and unusual, so I drew them from 3 different angles to see what they would look like in each.
For my horn design I wanted it to be unique something no one has scene before. My first try was to over complicate thing, I really liked this design but thought that it might be a bit to bulky for someone who is surprised to be quick, and skilled it would make my character come across as a bit of a brute. My second design was was some very simple horns I liked the positioning and the fact that a horn had grown out of a horn but hated the shape. My third design was the same as the previous but the shape was much more natural, I really liked these. Next I went back to simplicity with 3 small horns running down each side of the head, I quite liked the design but it wasn't right for the character I was trying to create. Then I tried to do Loki's horns but the other way up I hated this it just doesn't fit the shape of a head right. Sixth I started experimenting with horns more in the shape of plated than actual horns, I absolutely loved this, because I only know of one other character who does this and that is Zarkon and the shapes you can create by doing this instead of actual horns. Seventh I tried like a ringed horn this was quite nice but it didn't quite look right and I couldn't figure out what was wrong. Eighth was me trying to fix the problem with the ringed horn so I added another two and messed around with its position and scale I really liked this but a halo is a little angelic for an assasin. Finally I tried experimenting with plates again but with more curved edges to give it more of a natural feel, although I loved this I didn't think it was right for the characters motives.
I wanted 3 very long options, 3 medium lengthen options and 3 short haired options. My 3 long haired options were long, straight, flat or long, thick, meshy or long, thick, braided/dreadlocked. My 3 medium length options were emo or flat straight, bun or spiky, mullet. And finally my 3 short haired options were common, fade or half shaven, comb over or short, spiked. In the end I went for long, flat straight, long, thick, messy and short, common, fade as my characters race is quite traditional I thought they would be more likely to keep long hair than cut it off, but I still wanted a short haired option just so I had the choice to change it if I wanted to.
These were the poses I chose to try displaying my character in each has a different expression/feeling that the character is showing. The first is confidence, at their ability to win against their opponent. The second is the I'm loving this face, enjoying beaten the hell out of someone. The third is done with this, something stupid is obviously happening in front of him and fourth as enraged and is leaping to land on someone and smash them into the ground using both fists. The all have a strong and intimidation aura to them which was the vibe I am going for, they are a character the revels in their method of creating pain. They are someone to fear.
This page includes some of my characters expressions that weren't shown before (I am not the best at portraying emotions in facial feature, I prefer body language). The first is their resting face, how they look when they are calm and just going about daily life, the second if anger/agitated, they aren't someone who show extreme emotion, and the third is when they are happy this emotion is rarely scene on my character unless there is no work to be done as they are alone. The other thing on this page is my characters weapons designs, they do have quite a few. My favourite two are the sniper rifle that packs up and becomes a sort of across the chest bum bag, although my character doesn't always carry it as it gets in the way and the knuckle dusters because the outside metal becomes red hot to burn his opponent. The is also a detail long sword since to wield it you need to be very skilled with a blade, a mashcete there is little detail to this because it a weapon that doesn't involve skill it is used to angrily hack people to bits and do some damage. The other thing on there is a pistol but it's not that accurate of a weapon, so he only really uses it a a tactic to stun people in battle. The last weapon are throwing knives since his guns amo isn't limitless, while knives can be retrieved, they are a backup way to incapacitate people.
This is my character in an environment, I wanted to create a little scene in which they could stand in, this is what I came up with. In this scene my character has just slayed some kind of massive humanity monster and is standing atop of them as a contribute to their victory. They are in a circular building with steel columns being the only thing left holding it up. This building is old and has half the wall knocked out and cracks are appearing in the walls it's dark and light can only enter through the hole and two windows in the walls. I wanted this place to be reminiscent of the ancient collosum in Rome, but with a sort of modern feel to it. The atmosphere here makes people want to fight and that is exactly what has happened, resulting in the death of the big guy.
This character a large square frame which portrays them a strong, balanced and calculated which they very much are as the don't take risk, and don't exert more energy than is the minimum required. They have a strong face and a head covered in biological angular horns and plates this gives them an intimidating appearance sort of like a crown of thorns and let's the viewer know that they a someone who isn't on the side of good. Their hair pokes out from inbetween these plates as it has grown out from inbetween them this adds a bit of softness to their sharp exterior, suggesting that they do have a soft side deep down. They have light pastel purple hair with varying shades, it is thick, messy and very long, like Aaravos'. They have dusty dark red with a slight shine, it is for the chest and back, made up of two pieces that interlock, otherwise they wouldn't be able to bend. Orange light running through it, kind of like lava when it runs down the side of a volcano, this emphasises their fiery temper and is a little clue to what their knuckle dusters can do. This armour is quite angular and is about an inch thick, but doesn't inhibit movement. They have a black latex suit underneath their other clothes that also has orange lights in it but they are in more of a naturistic formation so it looks like a skeleton, there are also built in soles on the bottom of the feet so they don't have to wear shoes, these can also heat up. They also wear tech wear trousers over their bodysuit for the pocket convenience, because without them they don't really have anywhere to store all of their weaponry. They are black to help disguise the wearer and make them harder to spot in a crowd. The little tassels on them are just for decoration, which gives the viewer a clue in what they might like. There are two long shreaded red tassels on their back, that are attached by threading them in a cris cross across the chest these add a bit more movement to the character when they move and make thing a bit more dramatic. They also wear a long black trench coat, as in entertainment media the person in the long trench coat is always up to something and is quite intriguing to the viewer and invisible to the cast, it suggests that he is up to something, which he is but no-one knows quite what, yet.
One on hand I really love how my character turned out it has a lot of sources it draws on for inspiration that makes it quite unique compared to other character I have seen in media. I really love the head design as it incorporate so many thing without it looking to dense up there, the hair coming up between the panels on their head looks really good with the contrast between the dark, hard panels and horns and the light, airiness of the wisps of hair. I'm also glad that I added the light into the body suit as well as on the body suit as it creates a connection between the two that wasn't there before, as the looked a little isolated from each other. I also love the design of the hair I very rarely see character with hair the same a my character I can only think of 2, which is Aaravos and Trigon. Whilst designing the tattoos that go on my characters face and the lighting on the body I noticed that it references old tribal tattoos a bit in the placement and the shapes. I really do like the long red tassels that drape down the back of my characters they add more dimension to the character and for me seem quite interesting and make me what to see how they are attached to the back of my character. One other thing to note is that someone pointed out that the head of my character looks quite a bit like a traditional samurai helmet, with the four pointing outwards fins, this gave me some inspiration for the long sword, as t tried to keep the blade as long and as thin as possible as a reference to a katana.
On the other hand, I didn't like the design of the lines on the lower fore arm I think it should have been one thicker line instead of two, the thin weak looking lines don't suit my character and the look a bit to much like racing stripes for my taste. Another issue I had was colours I wanted to include a darker more subtle red as this would have made the orange contrast more and stand out better against it. I also wanted to have more of a warm brownish black colour for the horns and tech wear trousers but I didn't have the right pen colours at home, this would have given them more of a natural earthy feeling and add some warmth to his appearance, make him seem a little more aprocable and create a connection through the whole of the design by matching the colours of the top and bottom and the smallest area of the design, the exposed belly of the body suit and the biggest part of the design the massive trench coat. I also wasn't sure what colour I wanted to do the skin but by taking a step back and looking at it now I think a light warm grey would have worked very well as it would bridge the colour value between the black and red and still blend into the other cool colours like the purples and blacks.
In conclusion I am still quite happy with how my character turned out it is what I wanted to creates, the only thing that let it down was the colours and the medium it was created in. I think if I had made my character in Photoshop it would have been better because I would have had more control over how the colours look and it would have been easier to experiment with them as it is easier to get rid of a layer the having to draw the same thing out a thousand times to try out different colours on paper.
When making this project I didn't have access to any digital drawing software at home, so I was limited on the quality of the work I could create, but I did like the character concept, just not how it was exiqueted. I am going to continue working on and improving this character concept, so that I can use it as a portfolio piece.
