Feed

Millet seed serves a feed stock for animals, including ruminants, pigs, poultry and pet birds.

Birds that naturally forage on the ground for food

Juncos, doves, towhees, sparrows and quail, birds that naturally forage on the ground for food, feed on millet when offered from a tray feeder near the ground.

Millet Seed - Livestock

When feeding proso millet grain to livestock it is necessary to grind or process the millet to crack the hard seed coat for improved digestion. For ruminants, proso millet should be ground coarsely, and a hammer mill with a 6-mm screen. For pigs, a 5-mm screen is recommended (Berglund, 2007; Baltensperger et al., 1995).

Proso Millet

Some proso millets undergo dehulling to supply both human and animal needs. For swine and poultry, proso millet, like most other cereal grains, should be supplemented with lysine and checked for adequacy of calcium and B vitamins.

Proso grain protein values compare similarly with wheat or sorghum and are higher than corn grain protein levels.
