HP Latin

Salvete discipuli et discipulae!

Welcome to the home of Highland Park High School's Latin program! For 96 years, students at HP have studied Latin vocabulary and grammar along with the culture and history of the Roman Empire, reading a range of works from renowned authors such as Virgil, Ovid, and Caesar. HP Latin consists of students from every grade level, offers meetings to promote the ideals of the Roman civilization as embraced by the Latin program, and facilitates participation in Texas State Junior Classical League competitions. Welcome to HP Latin, discipulus vel discupula!

Why Latin?

While the general community regards Latin as a dead language, Latin is anything but dead. Over 60 percent of all modern English words derive from Latin, and numerous grammatical structures present in the English language originate from ancient Latin and Greek. Latin is the language of science, medicine, law, government, politics, and theology. Studying Latin will give a student an education not only in language, but also in life, a sharpened soul in addition to a sharpened mind.

Audentes fortuna iuvat.

Fortune favors the brave.

-Virgil

-Thomas Jefferson

In company with Sallust, Cicero, Tacitus, and Livy, you will learn wisdom and virtue. You will see them represented with all the charms which language and imagination can exhibit.

-John Adams

Hardly any lawful price would seem to me too high for what I have gained by being made to learn Latin and Greek.

-C.S. Lewis

I will say at once, quite firmly, that the best grounding for education is the Latin grammar.

-Dorothy Sayers
