Bob was the first freshman to start on the varsity baseball team in Howland High School history. He played four years as a starter on the varsity baseball team. After graduation in 1959, he attended Hiram on a baseball, basketball and football scholarship. At Hiram he played four years as a starter at shortstop and made 1st Team in the Ohio Athletic Conference for three years. Although football was not a sport while Bob attended Howland, at Hiram he played free safety as a starter his junior and senior years. During his senior year he set the record for interceptions in one season with 12 in the Ohio Athletic Conference in 1963. He was inducted into Hiram College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1986 and inducted into The Ohio Amateur Softball Association Hall of Fame in 1996. Bob coached in the HAC program for 26 years. His teams were always one of the top two teams in the league.
Roosevelt was an all purpose performer for Coach Pierson’s Howland Tigers. He was a four year letterman in football and in basketball for Coach Joe McKay. In 1969 and 1970 Roosevelt was named MVP in football. He held the record for longest kick off return of ninety eight yards and helped lead the Tigers to the 1970 Trumbull County Championship. After graduation Roosevelt attended Salem College in West Virginia.
Larry graduated from Howland in 1975 where he participated in football and track and field for three years. He was voted 1st Team Steel Valley Conference on offense and 2nd Team Steel Valley Conference on defense in 1973 and 1974. Larry also made 1st Team All State in 1974 and played in the north/south all star game. Following his success in high school he attended Michigan State University where he lettered four years and was a three year starter. In 1979 he made 2nd Team All Conference as a linebacker. Larry graduated from Michigan State in 1980 and was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the seventh round. He has coached softball, boys basketball, and girls and boys lacrosse. In 1995 his girls’ softball team won the New York Championship.
Craig Jennings is synonymous with the excellence of the Howland High School wrestling program. Craig became Howland’s first ever state place finisher by placing second in the 167lb weigh category. During his career, Craig was a second Class AAA Champion, a district Class AAA Champion, a Howland Invitational Champion, and a second place finisher in the prestigious Medina Invitational. In the 1976-77 season, Craig had a 30-2 record and finished his career with a record of 58 wins, 10 losses and 1 tie. Craig continued his wrestling career at Northwestern University and qualified for the NCAA National Tournament.
A graduate of the Class of 1990, Destry received three letters in track and field. He holds the school records in the 100m at 10.6 (along with brother Michael) and 200m at 21.3. Destry is a District Record Holder in the 100m at 10.6. (tied with brother Michael) In 1990 he participated in the state track meet and finished 4th in the 100m and 200m. After graduation he attended the University of Toledo.
Carl lettered 4 years in soccer, 3 years in wrestling and 2 years in track and field. He played in every regular and post season soccer game. He established the standards for intensity and dedication to the study of the game. As sweeper, he led the team in 1990 to the regional finals. His awards include: the Iron Man, leading scorer in 1992, MVP, Tiger Award, 4 time All Star in the Youngstown District, the Tri-County Soccer League, and the Greater Akron League. He was the Tri-County Player of the Year in 1992, The District Player of the Year in 1992. He was awarded honorable mention at the State Level before our area had a coaches association. Carl attended Marshall University on a soccer scholarship where he lettered 4 years in soccer. He graduated cum laude with a dual major in political science and Spanish, then a Masters in Public Administration while coaching soccer as a grad assistant. He currently coaches soccer at Hiram College. In 2008 he was NCAC Coach of the Year, Great Lakes COY and a finalist for National COY.
Michael graduated from Howland in 1995. He was a two time District Champ in the 100m and long jump. Michael holds the District and Howland record of 10.6 in the 100m (along with brother Destry). At the state track meet in 1995, he was State Runner Up in Division I in the 100m and long jump. After graduation Michael attended YSU and Lewis College on track scholarships. While at Lewis College he was a NCAA Division II National Qualifier for the long jump.
Marilyn graduated from Howland in 1999. During her high school career she lettered four years in golf and four years in track. As a freshman, she led the golf team to the state match. Her sophomore year she set the school record for nine holes with a score of 36. As a sophomore the following year she set the school record for 18 holes at regionals with a score of 77. At State, She finished 20th her junior year and 15th her senior year. Marilyn was a three year State Qualifier for golf. After graduating in 1999, she attended Western Kentucky University where she was a three year member of Western Kentucky University’s Women’s Golf Team.
Beth holds three school records in soccer: goals-season (6), goals-career (103) and assists-season (27). In addition to soccer she earned three letters in track and graduated with honors in 2000. Missing most of her junior year due to knee surgery, Beth returned as Varsity Team Captain her senior year and helped the Tigers to a 17-3-1 record. Her senior year Beth had 48 goals and 27 assists. She earned 1st Team All State, All Ohio Academic, 1st Team All-District and All-Conference, District Player of the Year, Team MVP and Offensive Player of the Year awards. Beth attended Ashland University on an Athletic/Academic Scholarship. While at Ashland, Beth had 12 goals and 12 assists and is still placed sixth all time for assists in a season. She graduated cum laude in 2004 with a BS in Business Administration and employed by the American Cancer Society.
Lesley lettered in soccer (3), swimming (3) and softball (3). In soccer she was named 1st Team All District, 1st Team All MAC and 1st Team All County her junior and senior year. In 2000 Lesley was named 1st Team MAC in softball, and she held the slugging percentage record of .778, until 2009 and was fourth in career highest bating average with a .556 average. She was named Howland’s 2000 Female Student Athlete of the Year. After graduating from Howland in 2000, she accepted an athletic scholarship to the University of Central Arkansas to play soccer. At UCA she was a Letterman in soccer and played one year of college softball in 2001 as a team walk on. In 2004 she was nominated for the NCAA Post Graduate Scholarship in Fall Sports. Lesley received a Doctorate in Physical Therapy in 2007. Lesley is the daughter of Al and Diane Seman.
