All World Languages follow the same guidelines for acquiring a world language. Please register for Spanish, French or German and the appropriate level. Two years of one language is required for the Michigan Merit Curriculum.
Spanish I
Students begin to develop Novice level skills in the target language, acquire a basic understanding of the structure, while learning about the culture through various forms of media. This course is not for native speakers or students with previous experience in target language.
Spanish II
Students begin to develop Intermediate level skills in the target language, acquire a better understanding of the structure, while learning about the culture through various forms of media. This course is for native speakers as a beginning course. For best results, enroll in level II immediately after completing Level I.
Spanish III
Students continue to develop Intermediate level skills in the target language, acquire an advanced understanding of the structure, while learning about the culture through various forms of media. For best results, enroll in level III immediately after completing Level II.
Spanish IV
Students continue to develop Intermediate level skills in the target language with the goal of reaching Intermediate High. Students acquire an advanced understanding of the structure, while learning about the culture through various forms of media. The course also prepares students for achieving the Michigan Seal of Biliteracy endorsement on their diplomas and most students will make their first attempt at a Michigan Seal of Biliteracy-approved proficiency test during this course. For best results, enroll in level IV immediately after completing Level III.
Spanish Capstone
The goal of this course is to continue your acquisition of the Spanish language, increase your cultural awareness of Spanish-speaking cultures, give you opportunities to earn the Michigan Seal of Biliteracy, and create goals for language acquisition beyond high school. For best results, enroll in Spanish Capstone immediately after completing Level IV.
AP Spanish Language & Culture
The AP Spanish Language and Culture course is a rigorous course taught exclusively in Spanish that requires students to improve their proficiency across the three modes of communication. The course focuses on the integration of authentic resources including online print, audio, and audiovisual resources, as well as traditional print resources that include literature, essays, and magazine and newspaper articles with the goal of providing a rich, diverse learning experience. Students communicate using rich, advanced vocabulary and linguistic structures as they build proficiency in all modes of communication toward the pre-advanced level.
Spanish Heritage Class
Are you a student who speaks or understands Spanish at home? Do you want to connect with your roots while improving your Spanish skills? Our Spanish Heritage Course is designed just for you! This engaging program is tailored for heritage speakers of Spanish, focusing on enhancing your reading, writing, speaking, and cultural knowledge. We use the innovative Ascendencia Curriculum, a three-year loop packed with exciting and meaningful content. Students can join each year and explore new topics while building their language skills. Students who take the Spanish Heritage Course from freshman through junior year will be ready to enroll in AP Spanish Language and Culture as seniors, gaining college credit while mastering the language.
French I
