Now that you have all of the information you need to put in your schedule in one place you need to choose what kind of a calendar you’re going to use.
Some people use a planner that has a different page for every day. Some people who don’t have a lot of things to put on it use a month at a time calendar. Today, we’re going to use a weekly planner that has the schedule at the top and a to do list at the bottom. I set up times on this schedule to match our school schedule. You will probably want to do yours the same, but if you have college classes or work during the day you might need to use different times. That’s ok. The goal is for you to know what’s going on, there isn’t one right way to make a schedule.
If you want to use this schedule it is attached to this page as a PDF file. Use the PDF file if you can print it. It's also attached as a Google Doc if you need to type on it, you would need to make a copy of the Google Doc. Writing schedules is WAY better than typing them. Our brains remember what we write a lot better than what we type. If you need to take a minute to either copy the schedule or print it pause the video here.
Now it’s time to start working through the information you gathered. Let’s start with the most important thing or class that you need to do. Let’s say that I work on Tuesday and Thursday at 3:00. That’s the first thing that I write in. Also, I need to remember to pick up my paycheck on Friday and deposit it. I’ll write that in my “to do” list on Friday.
The next most important thing for me is government. I really need to finish government so that I can graduate. The only class time is on Friday during 2nd hour. Everything for government can go on my to do lists. My goal is to be done with Unit 9 this week. To do this I would need to do Task 1 on Monday, Task 2 on Tuesday, Task 3 on Wednesday, Task 4 on Thursday, and take the test on Friday.
For science I do have a scheduled Zoom during 3rd hour on Wednesday and Friday. I am going to put that on my calendar. I also have activities that I need to work on each day. I’m going to put those activities on my to do list.
For math I do need to be on a Google Hangout Monday, Wednesday, and Friday during 5th hour, so that goes on my calendar. I also need to do my homework, but I only know what work I have to do for Monday. That’s ok. I can write the rest in when the teacher tells me the assignment.
My advisory teacher has office hours that I really want to go to, but it’s during 3rd hour on Wednesday. I already have a scheduled meeting at that time. I’m going to write down that I have a conflict on Wednesday during 3rd hour. I’m still going to put it on my calendar just in case I’m done with science early.
For English, I have a meeting time on Thursday from 1:30 to 3:30. My teacher says that I can “drop in when I need to”. I’m going to put it on my calendar at 1:30. That way if I have questions I can get them answered before I go to work. I’ll also put my daily work in my to do list.
Finally, my mom wants me to help around the house since I’m in it all day. I’m suppose to clean the bathroom, vacuum, and pick up my room. Right now Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday look the best to me to “knock out” some chores. I’m going to write them in on those days.
Now I’m going to “pencil in” some work time. I know that I do better when I know what’s coming next. I also want to do my work during the day as much as I can so that I can have my evenings free to play video games, hangout with my family, and help around the house. This will also help me keep up with my work. I’m going to write these things in pencil because I might need to erase them and move them to a different time if my plans change, for example I might get more math homework to do or I might get some extra hours at work if someone gets sick.
At this point my schedule is ready to use. It’s time for me to follow up. When you’re ready click on the “Following Up” tab.
