After the quick install, McAfee is ready to protect you. As with the antivirus utility, a banner across the top of the main window either reports that everything looks good protection-wise or offers advice to improve your privacy and security. Below that, you see six panels: Check Your Protection Score, Antivirus, Secure VPN, Tracker Remover, Protect More Devices, and ID Protection.

In my own hands-on malware protection tests, I observed that McAfee doesn't scan files just because Windows Explorer accesses them for display. Rather, it waits until they try to launch and will quarantine any that prove to be malware. With 95% detection and 9.4 of 10 points, McAfee ties with Webroot Internet Security Complete. Among regular antivirus programs tested with my current sample set, only Malwarebytes scored higher, with 9.8 points. Guardio and PC Matic also scored 9.8, but both required a modified testing regimen due to their unusual modes of operation.

Why would you not use VPN protection when it's available without bandwidth limits? The most likely reason is speed. When you connect through a VPN, your traffic necessarily travels farther and passes through more servers. The time from when your device sends a query to when it receives acknowledgment (called latency) tends to be longer, which can be a problem for gamers. More universally problematic is the fact that using a VPN can slow your downloading and uploading of data.

With the ever-growing interest in VPN usage, many security companies have started adding VPN protection to their security suites. Alas, in many cases, what you get is a severely feature-limited version. Typically, you get a skimpy allowance of bandwidth, and you must accept whatever server the VPN chooses for you. Bandwidth limits are all over the map. Avira Free Security gives users 500MB per month, as does the free version of TunnelBear. Bitdefender is more generous, allowing 200MB per day. And with the free Avast One Essential, you get 5GB per week. Kaspersky used to fall into this category, but now you get no-limits VPN protection starting at the Kaspersky Plus level.

This has gone on for 3-4 days and I was beginning to think that my computer is defective and was preparing to go into an Apple Store. Then when I did some googling I came across an article mentioning if you have McAfee Total Protection it can cause issues and that is isn't totally compatible yet with Ventura. That article was written in late Oct of 2022 though.

I've had this problem for more than a month.

I start with McAfee Total Protection installed on my FOUR computers and they show up in My Account > My Apps.

At least a dozen times (total for FOUR computers), something has uninstalled my McAfee Total Protection and it's been replaced by 1.9.253.1 and there's NO indication of ANY computers in My Account > My Apps.

The only thing I've found googling 1.9.253.1 is this garbage. It says it's specifically for version 1.9.253.1 ... -97c747a93ce1c266b8ea2a3591e064aa-application.htm

Thinking back, it might have started when I downloaded PC Optimizer.

Again, this has happened on my FOUR computers. I've had to uninstall 1.9.253.1 and re-install McAfee Total Protection more than a dozen times. One of my computers just came out of the box and McAfee Total Protection (and PC optimizer) was installed 2 days before it happened.

I can only assume that my virus protection, designed to keep viruses out, lets a virus in that changes my virus protection.

Update ... It continues to happen every few days. Now it's being replaced by 1.10.231.1 and there's NO indication of ANY computers in My Account > My Apps.

Please let me know if you find a solution.

Digital protection is no longer just about keeping our devices safe from malware and viruses. The internet plays a huge part in this shift. As we connect our devices to the internet and use online services like social media platforms, our digital life has become intertwined with other aspects of our lives.

HI, other disappointed user here : if you can open the VPN / Firewall window and see the active/ deactivate toggle but nothing happens when you click on it / or it crashes then you are on a known issue that total Protection has with MAC. It is just super badly done and apparently once their tech team fixes it it happens again as soon as you upgrade your Mac. a never ending story. I would advise anyone who is tempted not to buy this product as it looks like the issue is going one for at least 2 years.

McAfee is a robust software that offers premium security for your device. There are several pricing tiers, so you can fine-tune your antivirus selection for your specific needs. It is a full security suite, with a firewall, parental controls, phishing protection, and more.

The discounted pricing is competitive with other antivirus products, but once it renews you may be able to find some cheaper options out there. Still, with features included like privacy protection, VPN, and a firewall, we think McAfee is worth the cost of computer virus protection, especially considering the AV-TEST scores. If you want to try it out, McAfee offers a 30-day, free trial guarantee on all their products.

For years, the name McAfee has been synonymous with antiviral and security software. Its Total Protection suite for the macOS continues to be steadily updated (currently version 4.19.0.0) and offers a good suite of anti-viral, anti-malware, identity protection, VPN, and scheduling tools.

Hello! Thank you for your help in advance. I own a MacBook Air with the new M2 chip running Ventura OS. For some reason when attempting download the updated 2023 Mcafee Total protection the installation starts and then vanishes almost immediately. I spoke with Mcafee customer service and they suggested it was a potential settings issue with my firewall. Any idea how to fix this?

I have had Total Protection on two Windows PC Systems for six months. Last week McAfee sent an update I think ( Ver. 1.6,256) to my PCs. After the update, the total Protection Software was useless. Updates stopped working both automatic and manual. Scanning stopped working and there were some missing option buttons. Manual scan button no longer worked along with no scan options in the scan window. Total disaster. Since this happened on more than one Windows PC, at the exact same time, that shows the problem is with the update not the PCs. I called McAfee for a refund since the software was now useless, and I was told no. The update was not my fault. So I am supposed to pay a subscription for useless software. Just a heads up to subscribers.

I have been using Google Chrome for probably about 2 years. I prefer it over other browsers for several reasons. The first year I didn't have a problem. Sometime after the last time I resubscribed to McAfee, where I changed to Total Protection (I can't recall the name of the software I had before, but I know it was different, although also McAfee) I have had several problems with Google Chrome. At least once a week, I will get a pop up saying an unauthorized program is requesting internet access, Google Chrome, and click to allow access. I always choose the option to always allow. Since I have started getting those pop-ups, I have intermittant problems with Chrome. It will say Page Cannot Be Displayed, as if my internet is not connected, but I can use IE or Firefox to connect to the internet. I have tried all the troubleshooting on the Chrome website, none of it works, except for uninstalling, then reinstalling Chrome. I have had to do that 3 different times, and now tonight it again won't allow me access, although a few hours ago I was on Chrome, and I got the warning pop-up, when I again chose to allow. A half hour later my husband tried to connect using Chrome and it wouldn't work, but here I am writing from Firefox. I have a second computer in my home that does not have McAfee protection of any sort, I have had that computer for over a year, and I have never once had a problem with Chrome on it. Can anyone tell me what the deal is? Do I need to find a different security provider if I would prefer to continue using Chrome on my primary computer?

All your devices need antivirus protection, especially the PCs and Android phones. Even the more secure macOS and iOS devices can’t protect data in transit—they need a VPN, at least. McAfee Total Protection used to let you install security on every device in your household, but now that generous licensing is only found in the McAfee+ suite. Without that all-devices licensing and without several features that have been dropped, this suite doesn’t bring as much to the table as it once did. Our top pick for entry-level security suite is Bitdefender Internet Security. With perfect lab scores and a wealth of features, it still costs less than McAfee at every pricing tier.

There’s one more tier, but you won’t find it on McAfee’s website. Some third-party retailers sell a version of Total Protection that offers unlimited licenses, with a steeply discounted first year and a list price of $149.99. For that same price, you can get McAfee+ directly from McAfee, though. And McAfee+ has extended tiers that Total Protection doesn’t. In particular, if you upgrade to the $199.99 McAfee+ Advanced, you get full-scale identity theft protection on par with that of Norton 360 with LifeLock Select. Norton’s Select tier costs $179.99 per year and protects 10 devices.

You don’t want your antivirus protection to end abruptly, so opting for auto-renewal is smart. McAfee contacts you before the automatic renewal kicks in, giving you a chance to opt out. Auto-renewal also comes with significant benefits. For one, it activates McAfee’s Virus Protection Pledge. If malware gets past the antivirus, McAfee’s fearless virus hunters will remote-control your computer and eradicate it manually, a service that would normally cost $89.95. In the rare event they fail at their efforts, McAfee will refund the price of the suite. In addition, auto-renewal removes the draconian 500MB per month bandwidth limit on the VPN. 006ab0faaa
