In addition to complementing our mission, the Music course fits the Duolingo teaching style perfectly. Instead of watching lengthy videos or reading long-form text to get explanations of musical concepts, learn through interacting with game-like exercises that keep you focused and engaged.

Studies show that learning music helps with reading, verbal, listening, and math skills, and can even delay cognitive decline associated with aging. Though music education has many benefits, more than 3.6 million students in the U.S. lack access. For those wanting to pursue further instruction, private lessons can cost up to $400 per session.

Duolingo announced on Wednesday that users will be taught rhythm, note names, music reading, and ear training. At launch, Duolingo will only offer piano lessons. However, there's a good chance that the platform will expand to other instruments in the future.

Duolingo has now added two new options to the app, and for the first time, they're not languages. You can now learn maths, which is unlikely to appeal to many, but you can also learn music. With so many people regretting that they never learned an instrument as a kid, this has the potential to be extremely popular.

Duolingo Music is a new option within the Duolingo app that allows you to learn music instead of languages. It was released alongside another option, Duolingo Math, which teaches you some basic maths skills.

Duolingo Music uses the same gamified methods you'll be familiar with if you've ever used Duolingo to learn a language. By working through the lessons on a daily basis, the intent is to teach you how to read and play music. You get a mix of lesson types, with some asking you to name notes, and others getting you to play along with the music in a format that's a little like the classic Guitar Hero games, only with a piano keyboard.

Unfortunately, this section is going to be pretty brief, as there's a lot wrong with Duolingo music and very little right. The one thing that Duolingo Music is useful for is learning musical notation. If you want to play an instrument by reading sheet music, then you're going to need to know what all those little dots and lines actually mean, and this is what Duolingo Music is actually good at. You learn the names of the notes, the different lengths of notes, you learn about rests (the gaps between notes), and all of this will help you to be able to read music, up to a point. The flaw here is that the focus is exclusively on the treble clef. That's fine as a starting point, but if you want to learn the piano, only the music for your right hand is written in the treble clef, with the part for your left hand written in bass clef. Long story short, you're only learning one of the four main clefs that are used in music, and although it's by far the most common, there are still three others you won't be able to read.

Duolingo Music only teaches you how to play music on a keyboard. If you want to learn to play the piano, that will be of some help (more on that later) but if you want to learn guitar, or flute, or drums, or cello, then Duolingo Music can't help. It makes sense in practical terms, as an on-screen keyboard is the simplest way for you to interact with the app, but it will still be a huge disappointment to the majority of people.

If you want to learn how to read music, then Duolingo Music is fairly useful. You'll have to get through all the sections where you're forced to play, but you will learn the names of the notes, about the lengths of notes and rests, about time signatures, and about sharps and flats. You can then use those skills to go and learn a real instrument.

Duolingo is known for being a language-learning app that makes the process fun and intuitive through gamified, free, bite-sized lessons. In early September, Duolingo announced it was expanding its learning platform to music and math learning. The company just made a new announcement that will let you join in on the fun.

When selected for the update, users will be alerted through an in-app notification. Users will then be able to find the added courses in the top left where users typically toggle between languages. Like any other course on Duolingo, there is no additional cost for the new music and math courses.

Duolingo's new music course will include the same techniques it uses in its language-learning platform, with hundreds of bite-sized lessons, interactive exercises, and 200-plus "fun and familiar tunes," according to an announcement.

Duolingo shares that more than 3.6 million students in the US don't have access to music education. Duolingo's free music course is meant to help make learning music more accessible, with professional lessons costing up to $400 per lesson.

Martina: Dante starts playing the organ regularly during mass. And in exchange, the priest agrees to teach him how to compose music. One day, seated at the enormous church organ, Dante has a revelation.

Martina: Dante has his whole life ahead of him. But he already knows music will always be a part of it, and that his culture is really important to him. So that day in the church, he makes himself a promise.

Martina: Slowly, Dante got used to the freezing cold in Leningrad, and the demands of the program. For the first couple of years, he only played European classical music. His Andean music had stayed in Peru.

Martina: After his second year in Russia, Dante started returning to Peru for visits. He went once a year for the 11 years that he lived in St. Petersburg. Sometimes he would take Russian musicians back with him, to put on concerts or give master classes. And on every visit to Peru, he was reminded how wonderful Andean music really was.

Martina: In 2015, Dante was invited to the United Nations headquarters in New York, to give a seminar on how music could make the world a better place. During his presentation, Dante explained his unique fusion of musical styles and cultures. Among the 300 people who attended was the director of the United Nations orchestra.

Martina: To be asked to conduct the United Nations orchestra was a huge opportunity. Dante walked the streets of New York, thinking about how to blend classical music with Latin American music. Several hours later, he met up with a Peruvian friend who lived in the city, and mentioned what he had been thinking about.

Martina: Dante was determined that the show would go on, regardless. So he and his team figured out how to cut corners. For instance, the musicians would sleep in tiny studio apartments instead of hotels. And they would all sell tickets in their free time. Finally, they were able to come up with the money to rent a large theater in New York.

DuoLingo also says that a recent study showed that music engages areas of the brain that are involved with paying attention, making predictions, and updating events in our memory. Learning music can also help with reading, verbal, listening, and maths skills.

I am using Duolingo to practice Japanese, and I'd be able to practice a lot more if I could actually do this while listening to music. Right now, when you get to the next question, it turns down the volume for all other apps, reads the question, and restores the volume again. This is annoying enough that it makes listening to music while practicing practically impossible for me.

Preferably I'd like to mute Duolingo altogether, but I'd settle for it not lowering the volume for other apps (NewPipe is what I usually use to listen to music, and which I want to keep playing at the same volume).

It's not the best solution but if you use YouTube music, y-music (which integrates with youtube music) has the option to ignore audio focus and so can play uninterrupted in the background with duolingo, which worked really well for me :)

The Duolingo announcement on X hints that its math offerings will be enhanced as well. Starting in 2022, Duolingo started to offer gamified math lessons for kids and adults. But this announcement suggests that the new activities might also combine math and music learning, which makes sense as the two subjects are often considered to be complementary.

Whatever the case may be, bringing bite-sized, gamified music lessons to Duolingo will help to make music literacy more accessible for millions of people. More than 3.8 million schoolchildren do not have access to music lessons in their schools, despite the fact that music education has been shown to have a positive impact on health, school attendance, mental well-being and overall test scores.

Ever thought your language-learning app could teach you math and music, too? Language-learning giant Duolingo (DUOL -0.75%) is running with that idea on the very eve of a Street-stumping earnings report.

Duolingo has taken a significant leap in its educational offerings. In Wednesday evening's third-quarter earnings call, CEO Luis Alfonso von Ahn announced the integration of Duolingo's experimental math and music courses into the flagship app, a move signaling the company's expansion beyond language education. This strategic shift comes with both immediate impacts and long-term aspirations for the company, as it looks to cement its position not just as a language-learning tool but as a more comprehensive educational resource. 006ab0faaa
