History

In the past, voting was restricted to primarily white male landowners. When the constitution was created, it did not include the specifications of voting; it was left to each state to establish their own laws. Because of this, many states began eliminating the ownership of property requirement. In spite of that, more men could start voting. As time went on, slavery was abolished and the 15th amendment allowed them to vote too, but southern states practiced their Jim Crow Laws and created barriers for people of color. Eventually, the Civil Rights Movement helped prohibit voting segregation. In addition, women could not vote until 1920, with the help of Susan B Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. In the modern era, every U.S. citizen may vote, with the focus being on issues like voter ID laws, access to polls, etc. 

Importance

The act of voting is a fundamental way for individuals to express their opinion at the local, state, and federal levels. Taking part in elections is a civic responsibility. It helps to create a community that encourages the public to be informed citizens. 

Voting is a form of both a civic right and a responsibility because under our laws, we have the opportunity and right to vote. In addition, voting is something all U.S. citizens should do. It gives citizens the opportunity to express their opinions on who runs local, state, and federal governments and how they are run.

The First Amendment is a part of the United Stets Constitution, which forms the fundamental rights that make the United States a free society. The amendment warrants the freedoms of religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition. These freedoms are put in place to ensure citizens they can practice any of these rights without government interference. 

The freedom of religion ensures free practice of any religion while enforcing the principle of separation between church and state. The right to free speech allows citizens to express their thoughts and opinions, even if they are unpopular. This amendment is important in today's era with how much diversity and opinions people possess. The freedom of the press, allowing journalists to report on government actions and societal issues without censorship. This helps the public stay informed with correct information. The first amendment also includes the freedom of assembly, where people can gather for protest or various meetings. 

The freedoms in this amendment foster civic participation, while upholding liberty and justice. 

The right to due process is a fundamental legal principal in the 5th and 14th amendment, which guarantees that individuals are afforded fair treatment through the judicial system, before being deprived of life, liberty, or property. This principle helps to ensure laws are being applied consistently and fairly. This can be connect to Jury Duty.

The right to equality is a fundamental principle that provides that every individual is entitled to equal treatment and protection under the law, regardless of their race, gender, religion, age, disability, or any other characteristic. This right ensures that all people have the same legal rights and opportunities, promoting fairness and justice in society. The law prohibits discrimination and aims to eliminate barriers to opportunities and resources. If communities abide by the right of equality, it creates an inclusive environment where everyone can take part in their civic rights and responsibilities, while fostering respect to all individuals. 

Not only is the Right to Equality important in society, it is an important aspect in the classroom. Schools are filled with diversity and students that come from different backgrounds, but that should not hinder the quality of education they get or the interactions they encounter. 

Paying taxes is a basic civic responsibility that every citizen must take part in. It plays a major role in maintaining the functionality of the government and supporting the services of society. Taxes are collected at the local, state, and federal levels to fund public services. Public services could include education, healthcare, public safety, transportation, etc. By completing the obligation, citizens are contributing to their communities and resources. 

Paying taxes is a civic responsibility that reflects an individual's commitment to their society. If the taxes aren't being paid, there are consequences such as fines, penalties, add criminal charges. 

When teaching about taxes in the classroom, the teacher could connect with the students by talking about sales tax. Sales tax is a normal thing now, but that is something we all must pay when we purchase items. In addition, schools need to teach students how to file taxes.

Jury Duty is another civic responsibility that requires U.S. citizens to serve as jurors in legal proceedings, court cases. In these instances, jurors are asked to listen to evidence during a trial, deliberate with other peer jurors, and reach a fair verdict that aligns with the evidence and the law. Jurors are drawn from a diverse cross-section of the community, which helps create fair representation, impartiality, and protection. 

By law, jury duty provides a way for citizens to be engaged and contribute to the judicial process. Jury duty can provide a safeguard against potential abuses of power by government personnel, because the jurors can challenge state action to ensure individual rights. Ultimately, by fulfilling their duty, citizens contribute to maintaining the integrity of the justice system and ensure that all individuals receive a fair trial.

Selective service is a system in the United States that requires eligible male citizens and residents (age 18-25), to register for potential military draft in times of national emergency. The system was established in 1917 and ensures that the country has a process to quickly mobilize a reserve of individuals capable of serving in the armed forces if needed. The draft has not been used since the Vietnam war, but it it is still mandatory and failure to comply can result in penalties and fines. 

The importance of the Selective Service is fount in the function as a protector of national security. By maintaining an arsenal of capable individuals, the government can effectively mobilize forces to protect the nation. In addition, the selective service promotes a sense of civic and collective responsibility, meaning military service is a shared obligation in times of need. 

Being an informed citizen means actively seeking and understanding information about local, state, and global issues that affect society. This could include staying updated on current events, government policies, and being aware of the rights and responsibilities of a citizen. 

Informed citizens are better prepared to take part in democratic process, as they can vote wisely, advocate their beliefs, and hold officials accountable. If citizens know social issues, they can work towards fixing them with the help of the community and elected officials. Like the many other responsibilities of a citizen, it fosters civic engagement.
