What are Civic Virtues?

While the U.S. is one of the most unique and intriguing countries, the ideas that this country was based on, were not. These ideas are also known as Civic Virtues, which is the cultivation of habits, or ideas, that make up or contribute to the success of a society.

Enlightenment Philosophy

The Enlightenment era a movement in Europe that emphasized reason, science, and individual rights over tradition and religious authority, social contracts, and the importance of civic participation in governance. These concepts laid the groundwork for democratic ideals and civic responsibility.

Classical Republicanism

Classical Republicanism is a tradition that is rooted in ancient Greek and Roman thought. It is highlighted by the importance of civic virtue, active citizenship, and the common good. A major part of classical republicanism is that the people have an active duty to participate in public life and contribute to the community.

Religious and Moral Traditions

One of the major reasons that America was founded was so that christian values could spread. These values emphasized compassion, community service, and moral accountability, which influenced the framework of American society and promoted a sense of duty towards society.

What are some American Civic Virtues?

Here are some Civic Virtues that most people would say make up America now:

Responsibility: Taking ownership of one’s actions and fulfilling civic duties.
Respect: Valuing diverse opinions and treating others with dignity.
Justice: Advocating for fairness and equality for all individuals.
Courage: Standing up for what is right, even in difficult situations.
Empathy: Understanding and considering the feelings and perspectives of others.
Participation: Engaging in civic activities, such as voting and community service, to shape society.
