Project (Cargo Connect)

On December 5, 2022, the Estonian postal company Omniva opened a postal machine in which you can reuse the packaging in which parcels were transported before. Prior to that, the company became our expert and they really liked our idea. Our team wrote a letter to an Omniva employee and we received his response. The worker told us that our team helped develop this idea in Estonia.

We had a lot of ideas for the project, but we chose the 2 best of them and held a vote.

Problem:

Most of the time packaging doesn’t reach the point where it will be reused or recycled. And even if it does, it still has to undergo the second sorting process which in its turn takes time and money.

Only 5.3% of people are sure that their parcel packaging will be reused or recycled. This data has been received in the course of our questionnaire from 500 people from 22 countries.

In addition to this there are some household problems.

Solution:

To give people an opportunity to hand over the parcel packaging to the postman who has delivered the parcel.  Thanks to that we will be absolutely sure that the packaging  will undergo the correct sorting and it will be reused or recycled.

As we have found out from our experts, all delivery men return to their stations at the end of their working day and there they could unload all the packaging received during the day.

After further consultation with experts, we have been told that reusing is better for the environment than recycling and therefore we offer two options for packaging.

Often people buy packaging for personal needs, for example when we have to send a parcel or move a house.

Also it was interesting for us to know that at the post office it is often necessary to repack parcels as their packaging has been badly damaged. For this purpose a lot of paper and cardboard so using old packaging would be a great idea.

Estonia is a country of parcel pick-up/drop-off stations and thus we have come up with a new idea in this field. There are no paper and cardboard containers next to the stations and therefore packaging has to go the extra mile to be recycled.

Our suggestion is to put paper and cardboard containers so that packaging can be recycled straightaway.
