The first season aired on tvN every Thursday from March 12 to May 28, 2020.[5] Each episode was released on Netflix in South Korea, Asia-Pacific, Latin America and English-speaking countries after their television broadcast.[b][6] By the conclusion of the first season, the series became the ninth highest-rated Korean drama in cable television history at the time.

The second season aired between June 17 and September 16, 2021.[7] According to Nielsen Korea, the first episode recorded 10.007% viewership, setting the record for the highest premiere ratings in the network's history.[8][9]

Lee Ik-jun is an assistant professor of general surgery specializing in liver transplants and a single father to his only son Woo-joo (Kim Joon) after getting divorced from his absent wife. His cheerful charisma allows him to connect with both patients and doctors, making him a popular figure in the hospital.

A devout Catholic, Ahn Jeong-won is the son of the founder of the hospital and an assistant professor of pediatric surgery, cherished by his patients for his caring and sensible personality. However, seeing his patients suffer causes him distress, so he is secretly planning to become a priest against the wishes of his mother, Jung Ro-sa (Kim Hae-sook).

Principal photography for the first season started in early October 2019.[57] Some scenes taking place in Gangwoon University Hospital and Yulje Medical Center were respectively filmed in Hallym University Dongtan Sacred Heart Hospital (in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi) and Ewha Womans University Medical Center (in Gangseo District, Seoul), though the latter scenes of the season were filmed on set due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[58] Filming for the first season was completed in late April 2020.[59]

Shin initially developed Hospital Playlist with three seasons in mind, which should've been released across three years, but at the end of season two he expressed uncertainty toward the future of the series, citing exhaustion and other problems as reasons.[62] Both the cast members and the production team stated they would be willing to work on a future season.[63] Jeon Mi-do said that she often talks about an eventual third season with her four other co-stars and they take "turns to nag the director" about it.[64]

Hospital Playlist aired on tvN, which normally has a relatively smaller audience compared to free-to-air TV/public broadcasters (KBS, SBS, MBC and EBS). Its first season ended within the top 10 of the highest-rated Korean dramas in cable television history.[95][96]

A 10.0% viewership rating was recorded nationwide for the first episode of the second season, making it the highest premiere rating of the network.[97] The last episode, aired on September 16, recorded an average national viewership of 14.080%, which is the highest ratings of the season.[98]

I agree with what you said that Jun-wan (and the rest of the Lacking Five) is a consummate professional. The social media post was brilliant! And as you mentioned in your previous post, the show is about the hospital and the lives of the patients and doctors. Despite his own struggles, he chose to rise above it and still give his all to his patients.

More reasons to believe for IkSong shippers are 1) the two coffee breaks, 2) the side neck hug (the wow scene) 3) repeat of scenes that Song-Hwa find Ik-Jun really funny, and 4) Song-Hwa initiating get-togethers with Ik-Jun. Since season 1, it has always been Ik-Jun who goes to Song-Hwa's office, gives her coffee, invites him to dinner. But in the last two episodes, it was Song-Hwa initiating the invite. In episode 3, Song-Hwa dropped by Ik-Jun's outpatient room to invite him to have dinner. In this episode, Song-Hwa called Ik-Jun to say that there's chicken drumsticks for lunch. It seems the audience is being prepped for the sailing.

One of my favourite things about the franchise is how it brings together two strangers who would otherwise never meet save for a common cause and spins a poignant tale about a connection that is not defined by blood but pathos and community. I am of course referring to the two PICU mothers whose stories have unfolded and intersected in these last 4 episodes. You can imagine my relief and joy, equal to that of Jun-wan, when Eun-ji gets her heart. We’ve been on this journey of fear, frustration, camaraderie with them for some time and privy to all the emotions. The ladies who play the mothers give wonderful, relatable performances eliciting a great deal of sympathy. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. There’s something magical about the Shin-Lee collaboration that has been so effective in being able to tug at the heart strings from casting out mere snapshots of people who walk the corridors of the hospital no matter how briefly. We come to care deeply for these women and want the best for them. Eun-ji’s mother who was determined at the start, mentoring the newbie, Min-chan’s mum is in possibly the biggest fight of her life. A battle of the mind. She’s beginning to lose hope and faith because others have come and left the PICU and she’s still a fixture. It’s an all too human state to be in. And a very lonely one too. When you’re facing something of this magnitude, it feels that you’re all alone. Things aren’t happening according to plan and it seems unfair that someone who came later got picked first. Needless to say, it’s a joyous occasion when Eun-ji’s mother gets the good news and Min-chan’s mother comes along to congratulate her. The two women embrace and I am sitting in front of the iPad bawling my eyes out. The waiting game is finally over.

This is why I like Hospital Playlist. Not because it turns on the waterworks. But because it deals with the unpredictability of life in such a down-to-earth, surprisingly ordinary way. The drama is in the interactions. Spending time at hospital means something untoward has happened and it certainly makes the difference when the staff is professional, meticulous, and has the human touch. Suffering is an inevitable part of the human condition but it can be made less unbearable if the people around you have enough humility and circumspection to share that burden with you. No everyone can completely know how you feel but they can help you walk through the struggle and the grief.

I’m so glad we got such a strong Jun-wan centred episode because of all the flawed five, he has perhaps the most perceptible growth arc. The last time we saw this much of Jun-wan was last season in Episode 7, I think. He’s not as brusque or verbose with patients as he was previously but that’s been playing out for much of this new season. His relationship with his favourite offsider, Jae-hak continues to evolve in positive ways for both of them. Jae-hak is a much needed sounding board for a very busy and exhausted chief of cardiothoracic surgery. In short, Jun-wan is exhausted and no matter how difficult things get, the last thing he needs is someone playing noble idiocy with him.

The stories of people going through their days are seemingly ordinary but actually special at the hospital, a place known as the microcosm of life, where someone is being born and someone's life meets its ending. The five doctors are long-time friends of 20 years who started their undergrad in 1999 in the same medical school and now are colleagues in the same hospital and have a band together.(Source: Korean = Naver || Translation = YeoNiverse at MyDramaList) Edit Translation

I would probably give this show a solid A. Maybe you could argue for the A- since some important plot lines ended in a cliff hanger (what will Song Hwa do!!??). But even that sin is so small compared to what we can usually criticize in a show. So hoping for season 2.

Hats off to Show attention to detail, especially the surgeries, patients and medical community. Superb as always from the R88 production team. Hopefully they can feature a coronavirus special episode next season.

Your review is one like no others. Par excellence. Grade :A+

Thank you.

In addition to the actors in hospital playlist, one of my fav actor is Lee Seung Gi. I would love to read your review on any of his shows.

I'm particularly drawn to medical dramas and alr watched doctor strange, ghost doctor, hospital ship and etc. I've watched hospital playlist's trailer on youtube and it doesn't really pique my interest. Please convince me otherwise ://

I wrote it last season i am writing this again...in this whole process not only SW suffered as ikjun got married but also Ikjun suffered equally, even more. He also watched SW dating another guy for 3 -4 long years right in front of his eyes....and after that with other guys on different occasions all along loving her silently and bearing his pain lonely...as there was no one he could talk to....btw he dont talk his problems to any body even in present times.

And one out of topic mention and since its such a boring thing will try to make this paragraph short. The drama is an Utopian hospital where people get along. And these comments below are in answer to the boring comments about season 2.

And viewers call it boring? You can't even sit down to eat in a group. Half the time you can't even sit down to eat as indoor dining gets restricted because of lockdown restrictions. Boring hospital drama? If only we had a boring life.

And Covid doesn't exist in Hospital Playlist. So bring on this day to day life of Yulje Hospital. Didn't you guys like the outpatients clinic scenes? I loved it. Those scenes in the last 3 episodes and the hospital rounds were so soothing to watch.

Lee Il-hwa has built a deep relationship with the production team of 'Reply' since the series. From 'Reply 1997' to 'Reply 1994' and 'Reply 1988', she appeared as the mother of the female lead in every season and performed enthusiastically.

Previously, it was speculated that Lee Il-hwa was the voice of Jang Gyeol (Shin Hyun-bin)'s mother, who briefly appeared in the call scene in episode 5 of 'Hospital playlist 2'. However, in relation to this, the production team said, "It is true that Lee Il-hwa is making a special appearance in the drama. 006ab0faaa
