SLPs and other professionals have created THOUSANDS of materials that are accessible online for free or at very affordable prices. Some of these resources can be used with many different individuals and target different goals. Rather than brainstorming words that begin with /th/ or conversation starter questions, look for some of these resources online! Additionally, many other therapy prompts/probes can be found using quick Google searches. This includes more articulation word lists, types of figurative language, social questions, and more. Check out some of our TpT resources here! 


These same activities can be used for puzzles as well! Preparation just includes setting up the game/puzzle and having a few prompts available if needed. I will quickly Google search on my iPad to find articulation word lists or lists of figurative language and keep it handy while we play the game. 


Instead of spending 30+ minutes planning for one session, I try to plan ALL my sessions within 30 minutes (or less). These activities are not only easy to prepare but also cost-effective AND engaging and fun for the individuals with whom I work.


Transform speech practice into a fun-filled obstacle course! Set up a series of stations or stations in different areas of the room, each representing a specific sound or word. The individual must travel through the course and correctly articulate the sound or word at each station. This activity not only improves articulation skills but also adds an element of physical movement and excitement to the speech therapy session.

Barrier games are cooperative activities that foster listening skills, following directions, and precise communication. Place a barrier (e.g., a folder or a piece of cardboard) between two participants and give each person a set of objects or pictures. One person describes their arrangement, and the other attempts to replicate it using the given instructions. This activity hones descriptive language, spatial concepts, and attention to detail. This activity can be particularly used with older children.

Music and movement can be powerful tools in speech therapy. Choose songs with repetitive words or phrases and encourage the child to sing along and imitate the actions associated with the song. This activity targets vocabulary building, imitation skills, and a lot more. Additionally, it provides an enjoyable and interactive way to practice speech sounds, sentence structure, and overall language skills.

Incorporating speech therapy activities into daily routines or classroom settings can significantly improve communication skills while maintaining a fun and engaging atmosphere. Implementing these eight easy prep activities can enhance language development, promote expressive and receptive skills, and empower children to become confident communicators. Remember, speech therapy is not limited to the clinic; it can happen anywhere, and with a bit of creativity, learning can be an enjoyable journey.

Objective:  To describe the use of occupational therapy (OT), physical therapy (PT), and speech therapy (ST) treatment activities throughout the acute rehabilitation stay of patients with traumatic brain injury.

Results:  Therapy activities in OT, PT, and ST across all 5 cognitive groups had a primary focus on basic activities. Although advanced activities occurred in each discipline and within each cognitive group, these advanced activities occurred with fewer patients and usually only toward the end of the rehabilitation stay.

Conclusions:  The pattern of activities engaged in was both similar to and different from patterns seen in previous practice-based evidence studies with different rehabilitation diagnostic groups.

Have a client on your caseload that is demonstrating difficulty producing the CH sound? Perhaps you're a parent whose child is in speech therapy working on the CH sound? The CH sound can be a tricky sound to teach because it's hard to visually see what's going on inside the mouth when saying the sound. But no worries, here are some tips to help achieve that tricky CH sound.

You are going to love these cards if you work with bilingual (Spanish/English) articulation students. I love that I can have both languages on one card instead of having to have a separate deck for English and separate deck for Spanish. The cards themselves are high quality (nice and thick) with an included ring if you want to hand them up (I hang mine on command hooks). There is an included booklet that explains why using the cognate pairs are beneficial in therapy. Seriously a new go to product in my therapy room. Can't wait for more sounds to come out!

These bilingual articulation cards are AMAZING! Whether you speak Spanish or not, it is a great product when working with students who come from bilingual households. It's great to finally have a set of flashcards that come in TWO languages! No more double sets of your target phonemes with these cards! There is truly nothing like this on the market for speech therapy. I love that the images are diverse and colorful, yet not too cartoon-like so it can be used with both children and adults. The cards are really sturdy and come with a detachable ring which is SO PRACTICAL. You can mix and match the cards and add them to a ring to make your own customized deck for mixed speech therapy groups. I cannot wait for more sounds to be released because I will definitely be getting all of them. I'm all for supporting small Latina-owned business and this is truly a great product.

Some of the activities and tools on this list are a little elaborate, but for your artic kids, all you really need is a word list and a tally counter. There are some materials that just work for just about any kid at any age.

I have been waiting a long time to write this essay because I not only wanted to highlight the best receptive language activities but also share examples so that we know exactly how to help a child with a receptive language disorder. So bookmark this article and use this outline to click and jump down to any of the strategies you want to try out for yourself.

When we think about receptive vs expressive language therapy, one thing that I can say anecdotally is that building on receptive language skills is way more fun. It is less demanding on the child, it involves all the senses, it is very different from their classroom routines. All of this adds together to be engaging and a good time.

Now, add to this the fact that research is showing that receptive language activities are showing expressive language gains and you have a very powerful tool at your disposal. Receptive language skills are the predecessor to many expressive abilities. This works for the very young and is evidenced by the order of acquisition of test items on tests like the MacArthur-Bates. It is also true for second-language acquisition where the number of words we can read and understand far outpaces what we can say.

Most SLPs, even those just coming out of grad school, effectively use WH questions and following directions to build receptive language skills. We are all pretty good at this. However, some speech pathologists are great at this. And when I say great, what I mean is that their students can generalize their abilities to the classroom and they move through their goals super quick.

When WH Questions therapy works really well, we hammer on a single question or set of questions across multiple activities or books. Then we circle back. We focus on characters (WHO) for five books and circle back. We focus on location (WHERE) for five books and then circle back. All this adds up to generalization and solidifying the retention.

Barrier activities are receptive language therapy activities where a barrier such as a manila folder is placed between the therapist and student. Each person has the same materials such as 5 blocks or the same color crayons. The listener follows directions to build, draw, or arrange objects. The speaker is doing the same thing. After the command, the barrier is lifted and if the sides are the same, the instruction was followed correctly.

The funniest thing about barrier activities is how nervous the students get in the end. When you lift up the barrier to see if theirs looks like yours they get excited. I have to admit that I am guilty of changing mine when working with the little ones :).

Silent therapy are receptive language skills activities that are 180 degrees out from barrier activities. The speech session is held with ZERO talking including you. Students follow your movements to complete a task. They are able to watch their buddies and even lean over to help them out.
