It is co-sponsored each year by the Rappahannock River Yacht Club (rryc.org) and Yankee Point Yacht Club (ypyc.us). Shoreside activities include happy hour, music, meals and awards on the grounds of the Rappahannock River Yacht Club on Carter Creek.

Called a Turkey Shoot at its inception as it was then held the day after Thanksgiving, it was moved to early October to attract more racers due to warmer weather and separation from a major holiday. The name "Turkey Shoot Regatta" has been retained in part to distinguish this regatta from others also under the umbrella organization-- the National Hospice Regatta Alliance--and this regatta has grown to become one of the largest in the US.
All proceeds go to Hospice Support Services of the Northern Neck and Riverside Hospice Agencies.
Note that although Google Maps indicates the RRYC is adjacent to Rappahannock Yachts, however, earlier this year the Rappahannock Yachts business has been sold and is no longer operating.
