LESSON

• Frea came toward me with her ears pinned back, and I understood that she was asking me to move away. For the first time, I understood that request and moved. And apparently, something changed in her immediately. Later, Frea tried to walk toward me, and I asked her to move away using the reed. She immediately changed direction. We were both able to ask each other for space.

APRENDIZAJE

• Frea vino en mi dirección con las orejas hacia atrás y entendí que me estaba pidiendo que me moviera. Por primera vez entendí ese pedido y me moví. Y, aparentemente, algo cambió en ella inmediatamente. Más tarde, Frea intentó caminar hacia mí y yo le pedí que se alejara usando el bastón. Ella cambió inmediatamente de trayectoria. Ambas pudimos pedirnos espacio mutuamente.

EXPERIENCE HIGHLIGHTS

• That day, when I arrived, half of the herd had gotten out of the paddock through a hole they had made in the fence that gave them access to the food. Flash, Frea, and Amir were in the garden. I first went to say "Hello" to Mary and Luna. Mary greeted me, but Luna seemed to be on alert and not available. I then went to greet the mothers and their babies. They all greeted me except Inca. Vida and Wakan look very much alike and have grown so much that I can hardly tell who is who anymore.

• After that, I decided to leave the gate open that gave access to the hole the horses had made, thinking they might be able to find their own way back in. I found Flash eating from the stored piles of alfalfa, and when he saw me, he came out of there as if he knew he wasn’t supposed to be there. I gently guided them toward the paddock, but they became alarmed and started running from one side to the other in a state of excitement. Eventually, Flash and Amir returned to the herd, but Frea got separated from the group and somehow managed to get into the paddock where the mothers and their babies were. She spent some time “socializing” there, but then she started running desperately to get back to the herd and stopped near the gate. I went over to her to calm her down while people came to help open the gate. The herd did not like my presence and made “froms” at me, as if telling me that I shouldn’t be there. Everyone then moved away from there and went farther off. Later, Frea was able to get out and return to the herd.

• Then I sat with them for a while. Frea came over to sniff me and stayed nearby for a while, respectfully. I greeted her and talked to her for a bit. Then Amir came over, but he approached in a much more invasive way, so I managed to ask him to move away, and I didn’t want him to stay close to me. The others stayed watching me from a distance and seemed to be waiting for someone to bring them their food—their dinner, which still hadn’t arrived.

• At one point, I stood up and went toward them. When I was on my way to greet Flash with a “Hello,” Frea came toward me with her ears pinned back, and I understood that she was asking me to move away. For the first time, I understood that request and moved. Something in her seemed to change in response to my reaction. Then, after a while, when she tried to walk toward me, I also asked her to move away using the reed. She responded quickly by changing direction, still with an expression of surprise on her face. Everyone seemed surprised by this interaction, and when she moved away, I also walked in the opposite direction. It was an interesting moment.

• After a while, they moved from their paddock to the one next to it, and I followed them from a distance for a little while before leaving.

DESTACADOS DE LA EXPERIENCIA

• Ese día, cuando llegué, la mitad de la manada había salido del corral por un hoyo que habían hecho en la cerca que daba acceso a la comida. Flash, Frea y Amir estaban en el jardín. Entonces pasé primero a saludar a Mary y Luna. Mary me saludó, pero Luna estaba como en alerta y no disponible. Pasé entonces a saludar a las mamás con sus crías. Todas me saludaron, excepto Inca. Vida y Wakan están muy parecidas y han crecido mucho; casi ya no puedo reconocer quién es quién.

• Luego de eso, decidí dejar abierto el portón que daba acceso al hoyo que los caballos habían hecho, pues tal vez podrían encontrar la forma de volver por ahí ellos mismos. Encontré a Flash comiendo en los montes de alfalfa que estaban almacenados y, cuando me vio, salió de allí como si supiera que no debía estar ahí. Entonces los guié suavemente para que entraran, pero se alarmaron y empezaron a correr de un lado a otro, eufóricos. Finalmente, Flash y Amir volvieron con la manada, pero Frea se perdió del grupo y, de alguna manera, logró entrar al corral donde estaban las mamás y sus crías. Estuvo un tiempo “socializándose” allí, pero luego empezó a correr desesperada para volver con la manada y se quedó cerca del portón. Fui hacia ella para calmarla, mientras venían a ayudar a abrir el portón. A la manada no le gustó mi presencia y me hacían “froms”, como diciendo que no debía estar allí. Entonces todos salieron de ahí y se fueron lejos. Más tarde, Frea pudo volver con la manada.

• Entonces me senté con ellos un rato. Frea vino a husmearme y estuvo cerca durante un rato, con respeto. La saludé y hablé un rato con ella. Luego vino Amir, pero él ya vino de una forma más invasiva, así que logré pedirle que se fuera y no quise que estuviera cerca. Los otros se quedaron mirándome desde lejos y parecían estar esperando que les trajeran la comida, la cena, que todavía no llegaba.

• Hubo un momento en que me paré y fui hacia ellos. Cuando estaba en camino para ir a saludar a Flash con un “Hola”, Frea vino en mi dirección con las orejas hacia atrás y entendí que me estaba pidiendo que me moviera. Por primera vez entendí ese pedido y me moví. Algo en ella pareció cambiar con mi respuesta. Luego de un rato, cuando intentó caminar hacia mí, yo también le pedí que se fuera con el bastón y ella respondió rápidamente, cambiando de trayecto, aún con una expresión de sorpresa en su cara. Todos parecían sorprendidos con ese movimiento y, cuando ella se fue, yo también me fui en dirección opuesta. Fue un momento interesante.

• Luego de un rato, se fueron del corral hacia el corral de al lado y yo los acompañé desde la distancia durante un rato, hasta que me fui.
