LESSON

• I found it meaningful that both Flash and Michaela took the initiative to make eye contact or come closer to me when we were separated by a fence, in settings and circumstances different from our usual ones.

APRENDIZAJE

• Me pareció significativo que tanto Flash como Michaela tomaran la iniciativa de establecer contacto visual o acercarse a mí cuando estábamos separados por una cerca, en espacios y contextos distintos de los habituales.

EXPERIENCE HIGHLIGHTS

• That day, the horses had once again been moved to a different area. This time, the mares and foals were in the alfalfa field, while the herd was on the other side.

• In the morning, while I was working with Michaela, who was with the large herd of thirteen horses, that field bordered the one where the herd was. Flash saw me there and came over to greet me at the fence. It was a very pleasant encounter. Later, the opposite happened: when I was with the herd, Michaela watched me attentively from the fence, as if she were following everything that was going on. Receiving that attentive gaze from her was also very touching.

• I spent a little while with the mares and their foals, but they were very focused on eating. They saw me, but they didn’t come over. Instead, they wandered farther in to eat from the quince tree that stood by the fence separating them from the herd. It was as if the horses were trying to stay connected, greeting one another across the fence.

• There wasn’t much interaction with the herd either. I greeted them all, but they didn’t seem particularly interested in me or in doing anything together. I spent a little time stroking Flash and noticed that his coat was slightly damp, which I found curious considering how cold the day was. It was a very cold day, so I stayed with them for a little while longer and then left earlier than usual. Frea was not there because she was with the volunteers.

DESTACADOS DE LA EXPERIENCIA

• Ese día los caballos habían cambiado nuevamente de lugar. Ahora las mamás y las crías estaban en el campo de alfalfa, mientras que la manada estaba al otro lado.

• En la mañana, cuando estaba trabajando con Michaela, que se encontraba junto a la gran manada de trece caballos, ese campo colindaba con el campo donde estaba la manada. Así que Flash me vio allí y vino a verme a la cerca. Fue muy agradable ese encuentro. Más tarde ocurrió lo opuesto: cuando estaba con la manada, Michaela me observaba atentamente desde la cerca, como si estuviera siguiendo todo lo que sucedía. También fue muy agradable recibir esa mirada suya, tan atenta.

• Fui a estar un ratito con las mamás y sus crías, pero estaban muy interesadas en comer. Me vieron, pero no se acercaron; mas bien se adentraron aún más para comer del membrillo que estaba junto a la cerca que las separaba de la manada. Era como si los caballos buscaran mantenerse juntos, saludándose a través de la cerca.

• Con la manada tampoco hubo mucha interacción. Los saludé a todos, pero no parecían muy interesados en mí ni en hacer algo conmigo. Hice un poco de cariño a Flash que tenía su cuerpo como transpirado, húmido, lo que encontré curioso, dado el frío. Hacía mucho frío ese día, así que me quedé un rato más con ellos y luego me fui más temprano. Frea no estaba ese día porque estaba con los voluntários.
