Letting go of the agenda and paying closer attention to the horses’ state, so that transitions between states can happen more smoothly. Only introducing exercises when there is connection and willingness on their part.
I enjoyed trying this change in the game with Boston, although I'm still not sure how effective it has been in communicating what I'm trying to convey. What I enjoyed most was feeling that we were connected. He seemed attentive to me, and he didn't stretch his neck out to beg for food.
That day, the horses had already returned to their paddock. I stopped by to greet them in the morning, but only Sofie chose to respond to me.
Later, when I came back, I decided to sit outside. I only went in a couple of times to greet them, and on both occasions, they both responded to me.
While I was sitting outside, neither of them came over to the fence. At one point, I stood up to enjoy some sunshine near the fence, and that was when Boston came over to greet me. He greeted me and continued eating nearby.
Later, I moved to the other side of the fence, where there was sunshine, and sat there. However, they still didn't come over to see me. When I'd had enough of the sun, I returned to my original spot. As I stood near the fence with my back to them, Boston came over to me. I turned around to greet him again. At that moment, I decided to play with him. This time, I wanted to try something different: throwing him carrots only when he moved away from the fence and seeing what happened. It was fun because I wasn't asking him to leave, but whenever he did move away, I would speak to him to encourage him to keep going. Boston then became very attentive to me. He ate while looking at me and paid attention to my response whenever he moved away. At one point, he found the carrot. He also seemed to make gestures toward me, such as resting one hoof on the fence, which I loved. I noticed that he seemed to be trying to figure out what was happening and that this was different from what we had done before. We continued like this until he left. In our next session, I'll keep playing this way and see what happens.
