LA MANADA: SOFIE (YEGUA) Y BOSTON (CASTRADO)
LÍDER (DOMINANTE): BOSTON
Letting go of the agenda and paying closer attention to the horses’ state, so that transitions between states can happen more smoothly. Only introducing exercises when there is connection and willingness on their part.
That day, I wanted to do things with Boston without first allowing him yield to me and reach a state of neutrality and relaxation. I also think I tried to do too much in a single afternoon, as I introduced several things in a very short period of time.
Both in the situation with my chair and during the play session by the fence, I still need to be clearer in my communication.
When Boston intervened abruptly and bit Sofie while I was sharing a quiet moment with her, I followed his movement as if I were moving both of them away. My intention was not to exclude him or challenge his leadership, but to show him that I didn’t like the way he had intervened. After he yielded space, Sofie approached me confidently, but I asked her to stop. Perhaps my mistake was not to spend a quiet moment with her first and then reestablish my connection with Boston.
I want to pay more attention to what is happening and to what I truly feel, rather than focusing on how I would like things to be or how I think they should be. This will help me act from a clearer perception, less influenced by my expectations.
In the morning, when I stopped by to say hello to them, Boston didn’t want to greet me, but Sofi did. I stayed there with them for a little while, watching them eat, while the cats came over to play with me.
In the afternoon, when I came back, they were taking their nap together in the shade. I didn’t want to disturb them, so I brought my chair inside and sat down away from them. Leche, the female cat, kept me company. While we were sitting there, Boston was sleeping deeply, with his forehead resting against the fence. Sofie seemed somewhat uncomfortable, even though I was sitting far away. I didn’t pay much attention to it, since I was respecting their space and allowing them to rest.
When they woke up, they went to drink some water. Instead of waiting for them to come over and greet me, I decided to move my chair into the shade, exactly where they had been resting earlier. Leche came with me. When Boston finished drinking, he started walking toward my chair. I stood up and gave him a “stop” signal with my hand, but he didn’t stop right away. He eventually stopped very close to my chair. I thanked him for stopping. He settled back into a resting position, and I thought he had decided to continue resting near me. I gave him some affection, and then he got up and came over to sniff my bag. We then went back to the situation of moving my things and asking him to leave. He followed me instead of moving away, until he finally stepped to one side and stayed there eating. However, he came back once more, and the same scene played out again. After that, he went off with Sofie.
A little while later, I got up and went over to Boston. I wanted to see if I could practice an exercise with him, but he simply lifted his head to look at me and greeted me without standing up fully so I could do what I had planned. I tried a couple of times, but it didn’t work. I also tried to move him, but without much success. Sofie seemed unsettled by my “insistence” with Boston, so I eventually went back to my chair.
Later, they came back and started eating near my chair. At one point, Sofie was very close and seemed interested in approaching me, but Boston moved her away, and they both went off again.
Later on, they returned, and Sofie stood near me once more. This time, I went over to give her some affection. We managed to spend a little time together until Boston came over and moved her away. This time, I used my reed to signal for them to go away, and Boston noticed. He moved to one side, and Sofie came back toward me. However, when she started walking in my direction, I signaled with my hand for her to stop, and she did. I then went over to Boston and greeted him. I didn’t want to interfere with his leadership role with Sofie. After that, I positioned myself some distance away from both of them, giving them space. Sofie seemed confused: she looked at me, turned around, and positioned herself between Boston and me. I then approached her to try giving her affection again, but she stamped her hind foot, so I stopped. A little while later, Boston came over and moved her away again. Sofie seemed annoyed, as Boston’s movements had been rough and accompanied by biting.
Later, when they returned and I was standing by the fence, getting ready to go out, an opportunity to play came up. I started by inviting Sofie to play, but when Boston saw that we were going to play, he came over and took her place. So I played with Boston and gave him some carrots by the fence to practice returning to a neutral state and then doing a few exercises in which he moved away. I had to go inside a few times to show him where the carrot had fallen. On one of those occasions, I tried the exercise I had wanted to do earlier. I managed to do it on one side, but when I tried it on the other side, Boston resisted and eventually tried to bite me. At that point, I realized it hadn’t been a good idea and that he had felt uncomfortable. I went back to playing with him by the fence until we ran out of carrots. Once they were gone, Boston kept asking for more and trying to nip at me. I stayed there with him for a little while longer, and then I left.
Leche me acompañó.
