That day, Sofie passed close to my chair, making two strong snorts through her nose and slightly invading my space. I felt as if she were telling me that I was not welcome there. Afterwards, I went toward her and moved her away. My intention was not to react to her expression, but to communicate that I did not like the way she had passed close to my chair and entered my space. She moved away without resisting.
Later, when I returned to the paddock after a break, Boston approached my chair, knocked it over, and stepped on it. When I asked him to move, he did not. I think there could be a connection between my moving Sofie and Boston’s subsequent behavior, especially considering that Boston had witnessed what had happened.
When I stopped by to say hello to them in the morning, they didn’t want to greet me. They even moved away; Boston moved Sofie toward the back of the paddock.
Later, when I came to sit down, it was already a little late: they had already gotten up from their nap, and I sat in the shade. They were eating far away. At one point, I saw Sofie coming in my direction and let her approach. I thought she wanted to say hello to me, but, to my surprise, she passed close to my chair, making two strong “frons” with her nose, with her body invading my space a little. I felt as if she were telling me that I wasn’t welcome there. Maybe she was trying to express how she felt after the deep connection I had with Boston during the previous session, because I couldn’t see any other reason for her behavior.
Then Boston came over, and I let him approach, but when it looked like he was going to bite my shoe, I stood up and asked him to move away. He didn’t seem to like it and tried to sniff my chair and my bag, which I had to pick up and hold in my hand. I kept asking him to move away until he finally did.
After a little while, I decided to go move Sofie. She was eating next to Boston, and they were calm. I felt a little bad about doing it at that moment since they seemed so relaxed, but I walked directly toward Sofie and asked her to move away from there using the reed. And she went away, without protesting. My intention was to let her know that I hadn’t liked the way she had passed close to my chair, rather than reacting to her expression. Maybe internally I had a bit of a “hurt ego,” but I didn’t express that in the way I asked her to move. Boston watched the situation and, afterward, came back toward my chair, so I had to ask him to move as well.
It was a very strange episode.
After that, I stayed outside the pen for a while and left my chair by itself. When I was coming back, I saw that Boston was approaching it, but he didn’t do anything until I got there. I don’t know whether it was when he saw me or not, but as I was approaching, he knocked it over. Then, when I asked him to move away—from outside the fence—he stepped on it with his front hoof and kept his hoof there, unwilling to move. I tried asking him to move away, but he wouldn’t. So, prioritizing the chair, I threw a carrot inside, and he took a step back. The first thing I did was move the chair out of there.
Right afterward, the cat came, and I ignored Boston, who wanted access to the cat and to me, and I sat with the cat near the fence, still outside. I stayed there petting the cat for a while. It was exactly what I needed at that moment.
After some time, I left the cat on the chair and went back to interacting with Boston to see if he wanted to play by the fence. I tried to play with him, but then I saw that he was in a resting position, so I left him alone.
That’s when I tried to play with Sofie for the first time. She came over, I gave her a carrot at the fence, and when I was teaching her to move away, I threw a carrot and went inside to help her find it. Boston noticed, came out of his resting position, and came over to eat the carrot, without listening to my request for him to stop. That was the end of the game with Sofie. I then kept asking him to move away again and trying to move him. He seemed like a heavy mountain that wouldn’t move from its place. Then Boston moved Sofie, and they went off to eat far away again. So I left for the day.
Ella estaba comiendo junto a Boston y estaban tranquilos.
