After a long period of deep connection with Boston, I felt that he wanted to reveal a side of himself I had never seen before and gift me these two poses.
Boston seemed to understand my boundary regarding my things while he stayed with me by my chair.
I’m still learning to distinguish when a horse is seeking to connect and show affection, and when they simply want to come closer to feel my energy or have access to my things.
That day, I went in and sat down in my chair in the shade. The horses were far away, both of them together, eating. After a while, I stood up and went to greet them. Boston greeted me and then positioned his body in front of me. At first, I thought he was blocking my access to Sofie, but then I walked around him and went to greet her, and he didn’t do anything; he just continued eating calmly. Sofie also responded to my greeting. Then I went back to my chair.
Later, they started coming closer while they were eating. Sofie settled into a resting position a little farther away, while Boston kept slowly walking toward me, eating and getting closer and closer. Until, at one point, he decided to come over to my chair. He stood there with his head right above me. I wasn’t sure if he was trying to show me affection, so I wondered whether that was what he was doing or if he was just smelling my things. Then I realized that what he really wanted was to show me affection. So I let him stay there. I returned the affection, and then I saw him settle into a resting position.
I stayed there with him for a while, but having him so close made me a little alert, because they were cutting the grass with a very noisy machine, and the horses tend to get frightened very easily. So I preferred to stand up and give him some affection while he rested.
It was curious because when I stood up and left my notebook on the chair, he lowered his head toward it. So I picked up my notebook and asked him to move away. But he didn’t leave, so I put my notebook back on the chair, and that time he didn’t lower his head. This happened a couple of times, until he stopped wanting to approach my notebook. So I let him stay, and we connected again.
I gently stroked him while he was completely relaxed and half asleep. He seemed to really enjoy it. As I was stroking him, I found myself imagining what it would be like to ride him someday and go for a ride together. In my mind, I was quietly telling him about it. We stayed like that for quite a while, simply connecting.
Then, suddenly, Boston adopted a beautiful, almost ballerina-like pose with his hind legs. I had never seen any of the horses do anything like that before. It was completely spontaneous and something new to me. He looked very comfortable and stayed like that for a while.
Then the caretaker came over and started talking to me from the other side of the fence, while I continued to feel connected with Boston, who was still completely relaxed. Suddenly, Boston stood squarely on all four legs and, while still looking relaxed, did a kind of bow a couple of times. Again, I had never seen any of the horses do anything like that before. It was amazing. I felt as if Boston wanted to show me what he knew how to do, and I was so happy to see it.
After that, we stayed together for a little while longer, and then I said goodbye to him. When I went to say goodbye to Sofie, she didn’t want me to come closer. She made that clear by stamping her hind hoof firmly on the ground.
Entonces volví a sentarme.
