LÍDER (DOMINANTE): BOSTON
Letting go of the agenda and paying closer attention to the horses’ state, so that transitions between states can happen more smoothly. Only introducing exercises when there is connection and willingness on their part.
That day, I felt a lot of calmness in our interactions and noticed active participation from both of them, as they approached me several times. I also felt their closeness and a genuine connection.
The game at the fence with Boston was calmer. I tried to reinforce waiting, coming toward where I wanted him to go, and taking more pauses.
In the chair exercise, that time, unlike the previous session, Boston chose to come toward me rather than toward the chair.
All of the work that day revolved around affirming my intention while observing their responses without intervening in them and maintaining a neutral state.
When I arrived, Boston was trying to access my things while I was trying to enter the paddock, so I decided to step back and play with him at the fence. This time, I only threw carrots when he showed some movement toward moving away from the fence. This happened a couple of times, and I gave him two carrots. After that, I ended the game. We were playing slowly; he begged a couple of times, but he did not get frustrated. I tried to go more slowly, take pauses, and interact more with him. It felt good. We are still progressing slowly with this game. I also practiced asking him to wait at the fence, and a few times he did wait.
Then, when I entered the paddock, Boston did not come immediately toward my chair. I sat farther away because I wanted to repeat the exercise from the previous week: if he approached my chair, I would turn sideways to see whether he would come toward me or toward the chair. It did not take long for Boston to come toward my chair. When that happened, I stood up and moved to the side. Boston looked surprised and came toward me, not toward the chair. Then he moved away, and I took the opportunity to reinforce his moving away with the stick as he retreated. He was calm. I felt that he had processed it as something new. Sofie also observed our calm interaction from a distance, as well as Boston giving me space.
Later, when Boston approached my chair, I let him come, and he came more slowly. He did not try to access my bag; he just smelled me and then started eating near me. I took advantage of his closeness while I was sitting to pet him. I stroked his belly, and when he moved, I continued with his hindquarters and then his legs. It was a special moment.
Later, Sofie came to my chair. The first time, she just came slowly, greeted me, and stayed nearby eating. The second time, she explored more: she came closer, explored my head and my body, and then stayed nearby eating. I also took the opportunity to pet her while she was there. But then Boston got scared by the Southern lapwings, and they both galloped away, frightened.
I also went to greet them at another moment during the day, while they were eating farther away.
There was another opportunity later when they both approached me again. I was standing, and the three of us stayed there together until Boston asked Sofie to leave with his ears. But I was already saying goodbye, so I left after giving Boston a kiss.
