I feel like I need to take more pauses during my interactions and play sessions with Boston. I want to work more on that and be more mindful of it. I feel like Boston is a little “anxious,” and I’d like to see if I can “slow down” the interaction process.
That day, when I came in with my chair, I passed between the horses, who were eating a little distance apart from each other, but neither of them moved from where they were. They just stayed there, eating peacefully. I sat down farther away, and at some point Sofie lifted her head to look at me.
I was hoping Boston would come over because I wanted to do a little test with him. When he came to my chair, I would stand up and move away from the chair because I wanted to see whether he would choose to come toward me or toward my chair. And then I got the opportunity to test it. Boston chose to go to my chair. So I went back to my chair and picked up my bag, which was near it. He continued sniffing the chair, but in a much calmer way than the previous times. Then I gently asked him to move away using the reed, and he slowly started moving away, but at his own pace and still staying close. I watched his eyes and could see that he was looking at me out of the corner of his eye while eating near my chair. And those were the moments when I would ask him to move just a little farther away. Once he was at a distance that felt comfortable to me, I sat back down. I liked that both of them were able to stay calm and eat near my chair. Sofie was calm too, and Boston was not invading my space. At the same time, he was still able to sniff my chair and my things.
Later, we also had the opportunity to practice by the fence. That time, I called him, but I only tossed carrots to him when he moved away. At some points, I had to step in to show him where the carrot was, and he would find it. I’m not sure if he learned what I wanted him to learn about moving away from the fence. We’re still working on that.
There was a moment when I noticed something different: Boston moved toward Sofie, but she didn’t move. She lifted her head, and he passed by her while she kept her head up to let him go by. He continued on, and she went back to eating where she had been. That felt new to me because he normally moves her out of the way. It almost seemed as if she had chosen to stay close to me, or perhaps he simply wasn’t asking her to move that time.
