GOAL

• Letting go of the agenda and paying closer attention to the horses’ state, so that transitions between states can happen more smoothly. Only introducing exercises when there is connection and willingness on their part.

LESSON

• Observe when Boston resists and pay closer attention to whether he is actually responding to my request or simply moving away for another reason. I also want to become more aware of my eye contact, focus when I ask him to move, and find what can produce a “yes.”

EXPERIENCE HIGHLIGHTS

• That day I entered the field and sat down. Then, when Boston came toward my chair, I stood up before he got close and asked him to move away, but he kept walking in my direction. I was determined not to let him come close to my chair until he listened to my request to leave. So, since he didn’t listen to me, I moved my chair and asked him again to leave, but he kept coming toward my chair and my things. We stayed like that for quite a while until he left, and this happened a couple more times during the day. I decided to take that as the exercise for that day and nothing more. After one of these times, he went to relax, rolling around on the ground in front of me.

• At one point, Boston was eating by the fence but doing something new: he was bending his legs to reach some green plants that were outside, almost folding himself over in the process. I watched him for a while, and then I decided to go outside, pull up some of the green plants, and give them to him. I left some on the ground, and I gave others to him directly in his mouth. Then I went back to my chair.

• At another moment, while I was drawing, Sofie was very curious and came closer. She wanted to come to my chair, and when she was about to do so, Boston moved her away. At another moment, while I was negotiating space with Boston, she came closer, and I read her attitude as if she seemed to be watching the interaction closely. My perception was that she was particularly attentive to Boston.

• At another moment, I noticed that Boston wanted to play the game by the fence, perhaps expecting me to give him carrots, but I didn’t want to. I wanted to stay only with the movements involving my chair.

• At another moment, I went to greet them, and they accepted my greeting. There was also a moment when Boston got scared by something external and took off at a gallop. Sofie followed him, and everyone got startled by it, including me. But then everything went back to being calm.

DESTACADOS DE LA EXPERIENCIA

• Ese día entré al campo y me senté. Luego, cuando Boston vino en dirección a mi silla, me paré antes de que se acercara y le pedí que se moviera, pero él siguió caminando en mi dirección. Yo estaba decidida a no dejarlo acercarse a mi silla hasta que escuchara mi pedido de irse. Entonces, como él no me escuchó, moví mi silla y volví a pedirle que se fuera, pero él venía en dirección a mi silla y a mis cosas. Estuvimos así un buen rato hasta que él se fue, y eso pasó un par de veces más durante el día. Decidí tomar eso como el ejercicio de ese día y nada más. Luego de una de estas veces, él se fue a relajar, girándose en el piso delante mío.

• Hubo un momento en que Boston estaba comiendo en la cerca, pero haciendo algo nuevo: doblaba sus patas para alcanzar unos matos verdes que estaban afuera, pero era algo así como que se doblaba todo. Estuve observando un rato y luego decidí ir afuera, arrancar unos matos verdes y dárselos a él. Algunos los dejaba en el piso y otro se los di en la boca. Luego volví a mi silla.

• En otro momento, en que estaba dibujando, Sofie estaba muy curiosa y se acercó. Quería venir a mi silla y, cuando estaba por hacerlo, Boston la movió. En otro momento, cuando yo estaba con Boston negociando el espacio, ella se acercó y pareció observar atentamente la interacción. Mi percepción fue que estaba particularmente pendiente de Boston.

• En otro momento noté que Boston quería jugar el juego en la cerca, tal vez esperando que le fuera dar zanahorias, pero yo no quise. Quise quedarme solamente con las movidas de mi silla.

• En otro momento los fui a saludar y aceptaron mi saludo. Y hubo un momento en que Boston se asustó con algo externo y salió galopando. Sofie lo siguió y todos se asustaron con eso, incluso yo. Pero luego todo volvió a la calma.
