LA MANADA: SOFIE (YEGUA) Y BOSTON (CASTRADO)
LÍDER (DOMINANTE): BOSTON
Letting go of the agenda and paying closer attention to the horses’ state, so that transitions between states can happen more smoothly. Only introducing exercises when there is connection and willingness on their part.
Next time, I’ll try to intervene a little earlier with Boston and avoid pushing his face away with my hand. The next step will be to work on my timing: recognizing the moment before he crosses my boundary, rather than waiting until I have to physically defend it.
The two intimate moments with Sofie were very special.
That day, when I arrived in the afternoon, I came in with my chair and sat down directly with them, and this time Boston didn’t come to my chair. They were both very entertained eating farther away, and I started doing my journaling.
In the morning, I had already gone by to say "Hello" to them, and they were both in a resting position. Boston had his two back legs spread apart, which was unusual, and his head was a little lowered, looking kind of sad. I went to say "Hello" to him and gave him some affection. Then I went to say "Hello" to Sofie, but she didn’t want me to get close. Later that morning, I tried to play with Boston at the fence, but he wasn’t available.
After I had been sitting there for a while, I saw Boston move away from Sofie, and she then started eating closer to me. At some point, she slowly came toward my chair, sniffed my notebook, and then I gave her a little affection on her nose, and she stayed eating near me. But it wasn’t long before Boston came over to move her away, and she left. I saw that Boston was coming in my direction, and actually, at that moment, maybe I didn’t give him any attention. He then came toward the chair, and when he started moving his mouth around my notebook, at first he was being gentle, but it was also a little more than just sniffing. So maybe, at first, I wanted to see what he was going to do. And maybe, at that moment, I continued not giving him attention and started wanting him to leave, and that was when he took another step forward. So I moved his face away with my hand, because he was about to completely invade my personal space, and I stood up and started asking him to leave. Maybe, at that moment, I didn’t turn sideways, but instead stayed facing him, and everything happened very quickly. He was stretching his neck to get to my bag and to me, and I tried to get him to look into my eyes. There was a moment when he looked at me, and finally I turned sideways and asked him to leave, and he left. But maybe he left only after he had already done what he wanted, which was sniffing all of my things. I took advantage of the moment when he left and made signals to him as if he were following my request to leave. Then I sat down again. He didn’t come back to my chair that day. At another moment, I went to say “Hello,” and he accepted it.
At the end of the day, I felt like connecting with them, and I went to Sofie first, who was standing in a resting position. She let me get close, and I spent quite a while with her, doing some “grooming,” and she responded by rubbing her head against me.
Then, to finish the day, I wanted to give them the carrots that were about to go bad. So I threw some to them over the fence and then gave some more to Boston at the fence, without it being an exercise. But, in the end, the first time he was rough, and he turned his face to the side with gentle-looking eyes. So I gave him the others, and he was more gentle.
Y luego volví a sentarme.
