Letting go of the agenda and paying closer attention to the horses’ state, so that transitions between states can happen more smoothly. Only introducing exercises when there is connection and willingness on their part.
I tried to seek connection with Boston first, before asking him to move away when I felt he was getting too close. That changed the conversation between us a little. I noticed that Boston perceived something different and, at some point, he responded to my request and moved away. The most significant thing was shifting from trying to control the distance to creating a conversation about the distance.
I felt Boston’s bite on my hand as a playful gesture; it was similar to the way the cats sometimes try to bite me. Because of that, it was not a strong bite, but rather a mix of playfulness and, perhaps, an exploration of boundaries.
That day, when I arrived, Boston looked a little sad, perhaps because it had been raining nonstop for two weeks and, because of that, I hadn’t seen him the previous week. But throughout the day, that changed. It was a nice sunny day that day. I stopped by to greet them in the morning and then went back to spend time with them in the afternoon.
I noticed that Boston is still following my things when I enter the field, and that this time I was trying to get him to look me in the eyes before asking him to move away. I noticed that something in him changed with that, and at some point he stepped away. Then he came back and started again, and once again I managed to get him to move away. In between, when I tried to greet him with a “Hello,” he ignored me. At another moment, he strongly pushed Sofie away again with a bite, making her gallop when she tried to approach my chair while he was with me.
The most interesting moment of the day was when Boston positioned himself to sleep near my chair, but not too close. At that moment, I felt the desire to move my chair closer to him, and I hesitated. But then the impulse to do it became stronger, and I did. Boston accepted me staying there, very close to his head. In a way, I wanted to show him that I wanted him to be close to me, but that I did not want him to invade my space in the way he had been doing. We stayed there like that for a while, but then Boston took a step forward and moved a little closer. He started smelling me and eventually bit my hand. For the first time, I felt his bite, similar to the one Dulce, the cat, sometimes gives me, although the cat’s bite is more painful because of his sharp teeth. Boston’s bite hurt a little, and I made a small sound, then moved my chair a little farther away. He stayed where he was.
