Drought-Stricken Children
Drought-Stricken Children
The prolonged drought affecting the Horn of Africa is posing severe risks to children's health and survival. In regions like Garissa County in eastern Kenya, the scarcity of water has forced families to rely on contaminated river sources, leading to an increase in diarrheal diseases, which are particularly deadly for children under five.Â
UNICEF's intervention, which includes rehabilitating boreholes and providing safe water access, is crucial as these conditions not only threaten the immediate health of children but also their long-term development by exacerbating malnutrition. The dire situation calls for increased support and awareness to mitigate the impacts on the most vulnerable populations, especially children.
