Costal Bend Engineering Competition Held at TAMUCC
About 200 Corpus Christi middle and high school students, organized into fifty-two teams, enthusiastically participated in the 2024 Coastal Engineering Competition held at TAMUCC on February 23. The focal area for this year's competition was Industrial Engineering, centered around the theme of Packaging Optimization for Maximum Revenue. This event not only provided a platform for intellectual challenge and innovation but also served as an introduction to college-level engineering education opportunities for our future workforce. Industrial engineering, as a profession, concerns itself with the optimization of intricate processes, systems, and organizations. Industrial engineers are pivotal in developing, enhancing, and implementing integrated systems comprising people, capital, knowledge, information, and equipment, thus shaping the landscape of modern industries and commerce.
Following an extensive career at the National Institute for Occupational Safety within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr. Hongwei Hsiao joined Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi with the objective of establishing an industrial engineering program focused on training managers who prioritize job safety and health. The Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering program, a recent addition to the College of Engineering and Computer Science, anticipates its inaugural graduate to walk across the commencement stage in spring 2024.

TAMU-CC students will utilize a cutting-edge scanning system capable of capturing an individual's dimensions within a tenth of a second. This data will be instrumental in enhancing personal protective devices designed to safeguard diverse work populations. The program, initiated in 2022, aims to educate managers and employees, prioritizing job safety and health to mitigate workplace accidents and fatalities among Hispanic individuals—a demographic that ranks prominently on the national list.
The 2023 ErgoX Symposium took place on October 23, 2023 in Washington, DC at the Washington Hilton Hotel. It featured four concurrent tracks: Exoskeletons, Robotics, Cybersecurity, and Extended Reality. Dr. Hsiao chaired the Robotics Track/Symposium. Dr. John Howard (NIOSH Director) and Dr. Jennifer Cowley (Army Research Laboratory) delivered open and closing keynotes. International Ergonomics Association Fellow
Dr. Hsiao was elected as a Fellow of the International Ergonomics Association (IEA) in September 2023. IEA is a network of 57 international professional societies. The award is given in recognition of outstanding and sustained performance in the field of ergonomics and human factors at an international level, as well as an extensive publication record in international journals or international consulting or service at a high level.
TAMUCC Fall 2022 Commencement
The Fall 2022 commencement was held on Saturday, December 10, at the American Bank Center, located at 1901 N. Shoreline Blvd. Dr. Hsiao and university faculty joined the commencement ceremony to celebrate the accomplishments of over 998 students and their families. The University had 6 Honors Program graduates, 191 students graduating with academic honors and 21 students graduating with perfect 4.0 GPAs.
The 2022 ErgoX Symposium took place on October 14 & 15, 2022 - immediately following the 66th Annual Meeting of HFES at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in Atlanta, GA, USA. It featured four concurrent tracks: Exoskeletons, Robotics, Cybersecurity, and Extended Reality. Dr. Hsiao chaired the Robotics Track/Symposium. The National Occupational Injury Research Symposium (NOIRS) took place on May 10-12, 2022, from 12 – 4 p.m. EDT each day. NOIRS brought together researchers, academicians, labor union representatives, safety professionals, industry leaders, and students from multiple disciplines and fields to advance the public health mission of keeping workers safe on the job. Dr. Hsiao moderated the session "Human-Robot Interaction in the Workplace."
The Rogelio “Roger” Benavides Memorial Chair reception took place at the University Center Building, Texas A&M University - Corpus Christi on April 12, 2022. The endowment created the chair position that promotes industrial safety. Dr. Hsiao was appointed as the Rogelio “Roger” Benavides Memorial Chair. He met with the Benavides family along with university leadership team and offered his sincere gratitude to the family for their great passion, vision, and generosity in providing the endowment.
