Hongwei Hsiao, Ph.D.

Professor and Rogelio Benavides Memorial Chair


Dr. Hongwei Hsiao is a Professor and the Rogelio Benavides Memorial Chair of Industrial Engineering at Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi. He oversees the Smart Technology Advancement Research (STAR) and Safe Occupational Automation Research (SOAR) laboratories and leads the System Engineering Analytics Management (SEAM) and Signal Authentication Governance Evaluation (SAGE) initiatives, which focus on industrial innovation, systems analytics, and public safety. His research portfolio includes first responder technology, big data and artificial intelligence applications for public and industrial safety, hazard investigation and control, digital twin applications for roadway and pipeline safety, and multisystem smart technology integration. He teaches Robotics and Automation, Human-Systems Interface, Human Factors Engineering, Project Management, and Capstone Design. Dr. Hsiao also serves as an Adjunct Professor of Public Health at Texas A&M University–College Station. He has collaborated with multiple universities on projects supported by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), and industry partners.

Before assuming his current position, Dr. Hsiao served as Chief of the Protective Technology Branch and Coordinator of the Center for Occupational Robotics Research at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. In those roles, he directed eight state-of-the-art laboratories and their associated programs for 25 years and managed more than $100 million in research initiatives. He also brings four years of manufacturing industry experience and served as an Adjunct Professor at West Virginia University for 20 years.

Dr. Hsiao has also demonstrated strong scholarly leadership as a member of the editorial boards of nine scientific journals. He has contributed to more than 200 publications, patents, and applications. In addition, he has delivered more than 100 presentations on technology applications for industrial safety, public safety, and public health, including invited keynote addresses at international conventions and workshops in England, Brazil, Japan, Finland, Korea, and other countries. He has further served as a technical advisory board member for several research organizations and universities and has mentored seven doctoral students, nine postdoctoral fellows, and numerous undergraduate students.

Dr. Hsiao’s accomplishments have been recognized with more than 20 prestigious awards. He is a Fellow of three distinguished professional organizations: the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (United States), the Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors (United Kingdom), and the International Ergonomics Association. In addition, he was credentialed as a Silvio O. Conte Senior Biomedical Research Service Fellow by the U.S. Government in 2003 and served as a CDC Distinguished Consultant from 2003 to 2021.
