Does this cover the early 'skinny' models and the newer 'big' body style? Yes. The guide includes technical data for the original JC34/JC39 models as well as the later JC50 "big-bike" styling.
I'm a total beginner. Is this too advanced? Not at all. We assume you're starting from scratch. Every procedure is explained with the beginner in mind, focusing on safety and the "right way" to use tools.
Are the torque settings for the axles and engine included? Absolutely. Correct torque is vital on a sportbike. We provide a dedicated "Cheat Sheet" for all major fasteners.
1. Electrical: Charging System & Stator Failure
Symptoms: Battery won't charge, lights flicker at idle, or the bike dies mid-ride.
The Fix: Check the three yellow wires from the stator with a multimeter. You should see 15-20V AC at idle. If it’s lower, the stator is burnt out and needs replacing.
2. Fuel System: JC50 Fuel Pump & Priming Issues
Symptoms: Bike cranks but won't start; no "whirring" sound when you turn the key.
The Fix: Check the fuel pump relay first. If the pump is silent, the internal filter is likely clogged or the pump is seized. A gentle tap on the tank can sometimes "wake" it up, but a new pump is the long-term fix.
3. Engine: Cam Chain Tensioner (CCT) Rattle
Symptoms: A metallic "clacking" or rattling noise from the right side of the engine, especially when cold.
The Fix: The automatic CCT often loses tension. Removing, cleaning, and resetting the spring can stop the noise. If the rattle continues, consider a manual tensioner conversion.
4. Chassis: Leaking Fork Seals
Symptoms: Oil rings on the fork tubes or oil dripping onto the brakes.
The Fix: Often just dirt trapped in the seal. Use a "Seal Mate" or thin plastic to clean under the seal lip. If it still leaks, you need to replace the seals and refill with 241cc (JC39) or 221cc (JC50) of SS-8 fork oil.
5. Cooling: Radiator Corrosion
Symptoms: Overheating or the temp needle hitting the red zone.
The Fix: Inspect the radiator fins for "blue-green" crust. This is corrosion. Always use Silicate-Free Coolant to protect the water pump and aluminum radiator from failing.
