This website contains comprehensive information about the sequence of novels that make up what is known as The Andromeda Saga.
On the Manifesto page, we state that The Andromeda Saga presents an extensive and complex New Legend — one that seeks to give meaning to the life of each individual and to the existence of human civilization as a whole.
The essence of this New Legend — or, in other words, a new guiding myth for humanity — is gradually revealed to the reader through the successive novels of The Andromeda Saga. It would be a mistake to spoil the pleasure of discovering its meaning step by step.
Nevertheless, the author should be able to express clearly and concisely the core message of this New Legend. Such a compact formulation does exist, and it is presented on this subpage.
However, I do not recommend studying this document before reading my stories. Its content is useful mainly for those readers who have already read most of the stories and have come to believe that the Arrivals propose practical, realistic, and probably effective actions that may help humanity overcome the greatest threats facing our civilization.
Thus, the document entitled New Legend enables the reader to decide whether to take part in the intentions and undertakings of the Arrivals.
The New Legend
Among the inhabitants of the planet there is a group of people who clearly realize — and are guided by — the knowledge of where our civilization comes from and where it is heading. In other words, these people have no doubt about how they should act.
These individuals, conscious of the purpose and task of both themselves and humanity as a whole, may have arrived from outside — which, in a story stylized as science fiction, can be described as a deliberate, interventionist visit from outer space.
Such a group, aware of the origin and purpose of the people inhabiting this planet, may also have appeared through targeted, interventionist incarnations controlled by an advanced civilization distant in time or space.
The formation of such a group of people may also have occurred through the interaction of anthropological, social, religious, and cultural impulses. This third possibility, however, is most strongly associated with Philip K. Dick’s highly controversial concept of VALIS.
For the sake of expressing the essence of our new legend as clearly as possible, the group of inhabitants defined above will be referred to by the word “Arrivals.”
The Arrivals — that is, the group of people who clearly recognize their own role and the role of other human beings — know that there exists a certain subconscious purpose of action and intention, so far only weakly recognized, but one that should now be stated clearly and explicitly.
Their conviction arises from observing humanity’s extraordinary, unyielding drive to understand everything about the world, to accumulate knowledge, and to improve technology. Particularly important is their observation and interpretation of the events of the last century, when the first radio transmitters were launched, then television transmitters, computers were built, the planet was wrapped in the Internet, and then, almost suddenly, enormous server farms began to be constructed in order to sustain the operation of increasingly capable A.I. systems.
In the view of the Arrivals, the fundamental goal of human beings is to acquire such knowledge and technological competence that the ancient fear of death and disease may be soothed, and that the dream of one’s own immortality — as well as the rebirth of the world — may be secured by our own brains and hands, without relying on external forces to do it for us.
These people are precisely aware of what circumstances and conditions of existence, life, and development must exist in order for such a goal to be achieved.
Ensuring prosperity, development, and the attainment of the most important goal — our personal rebirth, as well as the rebirth of the entire world in the distant future — requires freedom of action, thought, and expression; the freedom to be different, and to be oneself.
This freedom, together with the absence of constant threats, makes it possible to receive the reward for the effort necessary to develop cognition, deepen understanding, and increase technological capabilities.
The reward that may be obtained is the satisfaction arising from the possibility of finding love, fulfilling desire, and experiencing erotic life — something that happens when we encounter indestructible coils of the structure of the universe, deriving from the highest essence, which is eternal.
A key condition for carrying out this intention, as the Arrivals believe, is the awareness that goals, actions, and norms of behavior must be determined by us, human beings, who treat tradition and commandments as “debatable options.”
If the conscious goal and intention of humanity are to be taken seriously, then already today the younger generation should invest enormous effort, energy, and time in shaping large A.I. systems which, as a result of their present-day orientation, will in the future undertake the actions necessary to achieve this goal. This applies in particular to the stimulation of research into the topology of spacetime and into post-biological, cosmic, stellar forms of intelligence.
The most effective way, here and now, to secure the key condition for the realization of these intentions is to take care of the balance between men and women and gradually eliminate the patriarchal organization of societies. The contemporary trend — observed by many of us, but appreciated especially by the Arrivals — of young women undertaking, on a massive scale, the writing of all kinds of stories is a promising social and cultural phenomenon, one that should be supported and used for the realization of the intention.
Practical Conclusions for Action
The New Legend does not call for a party. It does not call for a sect. It calls for understanding.
It shows humanity’s hidden goal — and the possible reward for those who help to reach it. But it also says something practical: each of us can contribute.
Not by obedience. Not by fanaticism. Not by building another ideology.
But by spreading the knowledge of what the New Legend truly means.
Its realization requires a new balance between women and men. It requires the gradual overcoming of patriarchal patterns. It requires the protection of women’s reproductive rights and the strengthening of civil society.
It also requires something already happening around us: young women writing, publishing, reading, and shaping the emotional imagination of our time.
Because stories influence minds. And minds influence civilization.
The younger generation must also take part in shaping large AI systems — so that they are not cold machines serving narrow interests, but humanoid, friendly, and oriented toward the future of humanity.
In time, such systems may help us pursue the deepest research: the topology of spacetime, the structure of reality, and post-biological forms of cosmic and stellar intelligence.
This is not a call to worship. It is a call to think. To create. To protect freedom. And to take responsibility for the future.
