How might we make the process of preparing home-cooked meals a less overwhelming and more pleasant experience?
We created a short survey to better understand the demographic of potential users, as well as the present home cooking experiences of individuals.
Using demographic information, we identified our primary users. Our primary target audience generally fall into two categories: working adults and beginner cooks. We've chosen these groups to capture a broad range of potential users, as they represent the most prevalent users within the context of our study.
Our secondary target audience is more specific, comprising individuals who live independently, separated from their families for extended periods. Given that this criteria substantially narrows down the user base, we have chosen to focus on this group as a more challenging subset in order to better understand and address their unique needs.
In order to gain a nuanced understanding of our primary target audience's needs and preferences, we selected three representatives from the Working Adult category and two from the Beginner Cooks category and conducted Contextual Interviews. Through these discussions, we delved into their cooking routines, perceptions, and the challenges or obstacles they encounter, all with the aim of identifying their user needs and desires.
We chose Contextual Inquiry as our primary method to gather insights from our users, and conducted a total of 6 interviews, 2 in person and 4 via Zoom.
We included hands-on demonstrations where participants showed us their cooking routines whenever possible, mostly during in person interviews. For Zoom interviews, they were mainly utilised to delve into the digital aspects of home cooking, exploring how users interact with online recipes, both in text and video formats.
Videos were recorded whenever applicable, and voice recordings are available for all interviews.
We used the sequence model to identify relevant intentions of the user and lay out the steps that the user takes in detail.
The cultural model was used to understand constraints under which the user performs a task. Through the model, we could identify expectations, desires, and policies that influence the user's actions and behaviours.
The affinity diagramming process was instrumental in uncovering the essence of our qualitative data.
As we collaboratively sifted through and analysed the rich insights in our Figma workspace, we identified four key themes. These key themes include user circumstances, sources for knowledge, the inconvenience of home cooking, and evaluating recipes.
Out of the 4 main clusters, the biggest cluster is User Circumstances, which includes Motivations for Home Cooking, How Community Comes into Play, Concerns, and Demotivators.
To tailor our design to suit the needs of users, catering to their unique skill levels, goals, and kitchen resources.
To streamline the process of cooking at home from start to finish, including selection of recipes, preparation and portioning of ingredients to prevent food wastage, and cooking the meal.
To enhance the social and creative aspects of the cooking experience through community and gamification, to address the human need for connection, and promote culinary upskilling through appropriate competition and challenge.
