Band classes meet once per week for 60 minutes during the regular school day and are open to all students in 5th or 6th grade regardless of previous musical experience. Students participating in an instrumental music program learn to work alone and with others toward common goals. Through performance of their newly learned skills, they develop greater self awareness and confidence.
Band class is a year long commitment! Performing in the school band is fun and rewarding, but it is important to note that playing a musical instrument is a serious commitment. It is important to bring your instrument to class every week, try your best, and stick with it! It can take a long time to learn notes and songs, but once you do, it is worth it! In addition to practicing in Band class, I recommend practicing on your own at home, 4 times per week for about 10-15 minutes. Practicing at home will help you learn your instrument and improve much faster, and make it more fun to play!
Band is a class with quarterly marks appearing on students’ report cards. We meet, at most, nine times per quarter, so attendance and frequent practice is necessary in order for a student to achieve success. There is no trial period for band class -- all enrolled students will remain in the program for the entire school year.
In order for your child to participate in band, you will need to furnish an instrument for them to play, along with a few accessories. I recommend taking advantage of one of the rental programs local music stores offer. It is important that all interested students be able to participate in instrumental music. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you need financial assistance obtaining an instrument. All books and music will be supplied by the school.
