"Let your smile change the world, but don't let the world change your smile"
I am Dr. Holly Stevenson and I am the Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion at Optimae LifeServices. In 2021, I received my Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Iowa. My Ph.D. thesis was entitled "The Problematization of Benefits". I have also completed the Graduate Certificate in Gender, Women and Sexuality Studies, the Certificate in Online Teaching, Graduate Certificate in College Teaching and Engaging Across Cultures Certificate.
Prior to embarking on my current role, I was employed as the Community Engagement Graduate Assistant at the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NNLM) All of Us Community Engagement Network. I also served on the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committee for The Graduate and Professional Student Government and was a member at large for the Council on the Status of Women, both at The University of Iowa. Additionally, I was chosen to serve on the Student Advisory Board for The University of Iowa's Student Counselling Services and advise on hiring matters with respect to DEI. Finally, I was selected to review grant and funding applications for graduate students at The University of Iowa and serve as a student diversity expert and co-leader on the University of Iowa's Accessibility and Action Committee.
Within my research, I have focused on issues pertaining to the marginalized. I have written and spoken on topics within the areas of philosophy of race and philosophy of gender. My Ph.D. thesis focused on baselines, benefits and social justice. My philosophical work bridges meta-ethics, political philosophy, ethics and social justice issues. I believe I focus on overlooked issues within philosophy that, once solved, can enormously benefit the discipline and society at large. I am committed to academic excellence and was inducted into Phi Beta Delta Honor Society for International Scholars in 2020.
My career goal is to make a difference through my philosophical research, and to make DEI more accessible to all. Eventually, I hope to show that a PhD in philosophy, coupled with a desire to affect real world change, can make you unstoppable.
