Topic 4 - Inheritance

Genetics & Inheritance

Important for separate science students.

Topic 5 - Inherited Disorders

Cystic fibrosis is a recessive condition. To have cystic fibrosis an individual needs to be homozygous recessive for the CF allele. Both Parents must therefore be heterozygous for the allele.

Polydactyl is a dominant condition. To have polydactyl only one copy of the allele needs to be inherited. Heterozygous individuals will have polydactyl.

Topic 6 - Sex determination

During Meiosis all 23 pairs of chromosomes are separated including the 23rd pair - the sex chromosomes.

As females are XX all eggs contain an X chromosome.

As males are XY sperm contain an X or a Y
