Superconductivity

When some metals are cooled toward absolute zero a transition temperature is reached at which the resistance falls to zero. This is superconductivity when there is no interaction between the free electrons and the lattice.

If an electromagnet has a superconducting coil a huge current can be maintained in it with no loss of energy. This enables a very strong magnetic field to be produced.
