Revolutionary Captain Jacob Gearhart to Farmers Honor Roll
Kingwood Township Farmer and Militia Captain Recognized for Securing Boats for Washington's Crossing
[Lambertville, NJ] – [Date, 2025] – The Holcombe-Jimison Farmstead Museum has officially added Captain Jacob Gearhart (1735-1813), a Kingwood Township farmer and Revolutionary War patriot, to its Farmers Honor Roll for 2025.
Gearhart is being recognized for his pivotal role on the night of December 25, 1776, when he was entrusted by General George Washington with the critical task of securing the Durham boats used for the legendary crossing of the Delaware River.
Born in 1735, Gearhart settled in Hunterdon County in 1753. He was a prominent farmer in Kingwood Township, managing a substantial 300-acre farm with grain, hay, and livestock, which were vital resources for the Continental Army. Gearhart volunteered for the Hunterdon County Militia in 1775, quickly rising to the rank of Captain.
On that famous Christmas night, Captain Gearhart and Captain Jacob Ten Eyck risked their lives, evading British patrols to collect and secure the boats essential for the surprise attack on Trenton. His service to the Revolution also included fighting in the Battle of Brandywine, the Battle of Monmouth, and enduring the harsh winter at Valley Forge.
'Captain Gearhart embodies the critical dual role of the citizen-soldier and farmer,' said Lew Needham. 'He managed his 300-acre Hunterdon farm while simultaneously risking his life for the Revolution. We are proud to add his name to the Farmers Honor Roll to ensure his local story is remembered.'
Gearhart’s legacy remains visible in Hunterdon County. A historical marker in Annandale commemorates his service, and his original farmhouse, built around 1765, is recognized as a New Jersey historical place.
