PRESS RELEASE
For the past several years, we have labelled our snapshots based on year-to-week. For example, the first snapshot of this entire project (v2.0) was Y19W04a. Y19 represents the year it was released, being 2019, W04 represents the week, and the letter at the end represents a patch in alphabetical order. It has caused confusion and could conflict with legitimate Minecraft Snapshots, as seen during 3.0 development.
As you are aware, in Release 4.0, we are in the experimental snapshot phase for about a couple years now while the map undergoes migration to patch several issues and revamp multiple areas. Before we initiated migration, we started labeling these snapshots as betas. For example, Y21W38a was 4.0 Beta 1.
However, we plan to phase out of the whole year-to-week naming scheme and will be migrating these names to using just using the Upcoming Release Version, followed by Beta and a number, in order. And as for the old names, those will be replacing build numbers that seem to be just a random set of alphanumeric characters with the old snapshot names, starting with the next experimental snapshot. These name changes will affect experimental snapshot builds, prereleases and release candidates as well, and can be determined from the following below, using existing versioning as an example:
4.0-canary.6 (4.0-es6)
3.0-beta.30 (Y20W16a)
3.0-prerelease.3Â (3.0-pre3)
3.0-rc.5 (3.0 GM 5)
3.0-rc.6 (3.0 RC1)
Existing versions will use the old system.
For the next few versions, all old build names will be referenced in the update logs on PMC.
In addition, with Minecraft releasing the Trails and Tales update on June 7th, 1.19.4 will no longer be supported when the update drops. Moving forward, we are aware that datapacks do break in the update, and a patch will be released as soon as feasibly possible. Please be patient with performance as modders (CaffineMC, etc) need to update their performance mods. 4.0-es6 is the last snapshot to support 1.19.4.
