Permeable pavement is a kind of pavement that lets water pass through gaps in it. The water passes through filters and into a storage basin to be slowly released into the surrounding soil. Permeable pavement removes phosphorus, zinc, motor oil, copper, and sediment and allows up to 70-80% of annual rainfall to pass through them. Permeable pavers are blocks of stone or concrete that allow rainwater to pass through them. The water, which would otherwise become stormwater runoff, can absorb into the ground.

Benefits of Permeable Pavers/Pavement

  • Reduce polluted stormwater runoff

  • Reduce ponding water

  • Prevent erosion

  • Keep the rain water on the property, benefiting plants and the environment

Things to Consider

  • They should not be used where water from other areas flow to, since only rain that falls directly on the pavement can move through them.

  • They cannot be used adjacent to your house. Water should always be directed away from your house.

  • Sediment must be removed regularly from permeable pavers/pavement.
