There's No Such Thing as Free Land: 

Understanding the Homestead Act through Multiple Perspectives

The Homestead Act of 1862 changed land ownership for the world.  The collaboration, entitled “There is No Such Thing as Free Land: Understanding the Homestead Act Through Multiple Perspectives,”explores the opportunities and “costs” of homestead legislation offered to different groups. The project is created in partnership between Homestead National Historical Park (HNHP) and the Nebraska Writing Project (NeWP), The No Free Land project links works to tell the history of the Homestead Act through Native, immigrant, and women/suffragists homesteaders stories into classroom and field trip experiences.
