Specials Monday! PE Home Learning for R1 Students (Week 8)

Welcome to Specials Monday! With no home learning from classroom teachers today, this is a great opportunity to catch up on any specialists lessons you've missed. For PE, I would encourage you to make an effort to check out week 3 and learn more about the importance of Brain/Activity breaks for your children.

New Activity! If you're all caught up on your PE Home Learning, practice your Catching!

    • Watch the video below! "Using our EYES helps us control objects!" We should be looking at what we want to catch.
    • Have your child find an object or objects the can safely practice catching. It is helpful if they start with a ball that bounces so they can start out with challenge 1: bounce and catch.
    • "Counting lets us know we're getting better!"- your child should be counting their catches. If they can get 5-10 catches with challenge 1, move on to challenge 2: toss and catch.
    • Try tossing and catching some different objects: different sized playing balls, pillows, small towels, etc.

Play 60! Get sixty minutes, or more, of physical activity everyday!

PE Home Learning for R1 Students (Week 1)

For Parents:

We know this has been a challenging time for families at HKIS with the disruption to routines, health concerns, etc., but we want to stress the importance of your young children being active even during these challenging times.

SHAPE America (The Society of Health And Physical Educators) recommends school-age children accumulate at least 60 minutes and up to several hours of physical activity per day while avoiding prolonged periods of inactivity.

As Mr. Heney stressed in his message, it is important to keep children safe by avoiding large groups, but we would also encourage you to take your kids hiking or seek out open spaces where children can run and play vigorously. Remember, at this age, any physical activity is generally good, so encourage your kids to run, climb, play, swim, kick, throw, jump, roll, and any other possible movement you or they can come up with! And if you and other friends and family can join in on these activities, it only makes the experience that much more meaningful for your children. Make physical activity a part of your family’s lifestyle.

Below is a video for students to watch, giving students instructions/reminders for working on their train and tree movements. Please feel free to watch along with them, so you have a better idea about the activity. They will need some space to work on these skills. You can also further student learning by asking them how they are using their eyes to help them control their body (where do you need to look) and encouraging students to do their best quality movements.
