Brain Breaks!

    • Our young learners are usually only capable of focussing their attention on a task for a few minutes at a time. Also, if a person (child or adult) sits around for more than 15-20 minutes at a time without getting up, their metabolism starts to drop and energy levels go down.
    • By taking quick activity (brain) breaks when a child is beginning to struggle with their attention, it allows them to better focus on learning activities and up their alertness.

Welcome to Specials Monday! With no home learning from classroom teachers today, this is a great opportunity to catch up on any specialists lessons you've missed. For PE, I would encourage you to make an effort to check out week 3 and learn more about the importance of Brain/Activity breaks for your children.

Would you like to learn more about how physical activity improves your child's ability to learn? Read this article! https://www.dailyrepublic.com/all-dr-news/solano-news/local-features/local-lifestyle-columns/eye-on-education-exercise-improves-learning/

New Activity! If you're all caught up on your PE Home Learning, practice your Circus Skills!

    • Watch the video below!
    • Have your child find an object or objects at home they can control safely and responsibly (ex: a ball, jump rope, hula hoop, towel, pillow, etc.).
    • Spend a few minutes coming up with creative ways you can control the object(s). They can do this on their own or with a partner.
    • Choose your favorite way to control the object(s) and practice your control for a few minutes
    • Try a performance! Try to control the object in your own creative way, without stopping, for about ten seconds!

Play 60! Get sixty minutes, or more, of physical activity everyday!

PE Home Learning for G1 Students (Week 1)

For Parents:

We know this has been a challenging time for families at HKIS with the disruption to routines, health concerns, etc., but we want to stress the importance of your young children being active even during these challenging times.

SHAPE America (The Society of Health And Physical Educators) recommends school-age children accumulate at least 60 minutes and up to several hours of physical activity per day while avoiding prolonged periods of inactivity.

As Mr. Heney stressed in his message, it is important to keep children safe by avoiding large groups, but we would also encourage you to take your kids hiking or seek out open spaces where children can run and play vigorously. Remember, at this age, any physical activity is generally good, so encourage your kids to run, climb, play, swim, kick, throw, jump, roll, and any other possible movement you or they can come up with! And if you and other friends and family can join in on these activities, it only makes the experience that much more meaningful for your children. Make physical activity a part of your family’s lifestyle.

Below is a video for students to watch, giving students instructions/reminders for working on their train and tree movements. Please feel free to watch along with them, so you have a better idea about the activity. They will need some space to work on these skills. You can also further student learning by asking the questions about the force they use for each skill (does it use soft, hard, or medium force?), and by encouraging students to do their best quality movements.

The movements are:

  1. Sliding (Train)- pattern of three
  2. Shaking (Tree)
  3. Sliding (Train)- pattern of three
  4. Swinging (Tree)
  5. High Skipping (Train)
  6. Twisting (Tree)
  7. Jumping and hopping (Train)- combine with a pattern of three
  8. Bending/Straightening (Tree)
  9. Long leaps (Train)
  10. Tucking/Stretching (Tree)
  11. Make up your own pattern!

Please feel free to contact us if you have any comments, questions, or concerns.
