Project Graduation began in Oxford Hills, Maine, in 1980, as a community response to seven alcohol- and drug-related teen deaths that occurred during the 1979 commencement season. The initial event was a chemical-free, all-night party for seniors that was widely considered a success, and it soon became a state and then national model for providing a safe alternative to traditional graduation-night celebrations.
It’s a secret! Every year the Decorating Committee comes up with a few ideas and then Project Graduation Committee votes at our November meeting. In the spring the theme is revealed when the invitations are emailed.
Prior themes include Winter Wonderland, Mardi Gras and Tropical Paradise. Visit our Facebook and Instagram for pictures.
The event is free for students; however our cost is approximately $135 per student. Although RSD 17 supports our efforts, it does not provide any direct funding. Our financial support comes from various fundraisers and generous donations from parents, community members, and local businesses, and service organizations.
There are many ways to help!
Volunteer in person (set up, decorate, pick up items, etc.)
Volunteer from home (create decorations, send thank you notes, etc.)
Join a committee
Make a monetary donation - see if your employer supports matching gift donations
Make a physical donation - gift cards, prize items, etc.
Support a fundraiser
Recruit friends
Share fundraising social media posts
Donate or let us borrow items that fit the theme (we will specify as the event nears)
As students graduate, parents often move off the committee, so there is constant turnover. Please consider joining as an underclassmen parent so you can familiarize yourself with our activities and help plan something great for several classes of students – including yours. As an underclassman parent it is especially appreciated to volunteer on graduation night so parents of graduates have time to celebrate with their families.
