Also known as the Great War, World War 1 was a conflict between the Central Powers (Germany, Bulgaria, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire) and the Allied Powers (the United States, Great Britain, Russia, France, Japan, Italy, and Romania). 'The war to end all wars' began when the archduke of Austria-Hungary, Franz Ferdinand, was assassinated. His death triggered fighting between Austria-Hungary and Serbia, soon provoking Germany to declare war. The Great War is arguably most famous for its 'trench warfare', which was one of the leading causes for the horrific carnage that occured.
